Andy Souwer: Early Life

Andy Souwer was born on 9th November of 1982 in Den Bosch, Netherlands.

Souwer was very young, about seven years old when he started training in Ling Ho Gym in Den Bosch to start kickboxing.

Andy had his first-ever kickboxing fight about a year after joining the Gym, i.e., eight years old.

Therefore, he was very good at it and started winning a lot of fights, and he started competing in all the weight classes.

Andy, later on, showed his potential by winning every fight and finally became the Dutch Champion.

Andy Souwer: Career

Early Career

Souwer was just 16 years old when he fought his first A-Class MTBN Title match in 1998.

Andy was victorious and further won three different World titles at just 18 years old.

Firstly, Souwer traveled to Japan to participate in the S-Cup 2002 Shoot Boxing Championship in 2002.

He won most of his fights relatively easily and beat Zheng Yuhao, the Chinese Sanshou title challenger.

Andy Souwer made his K-1 debut in 2003. Souwer won his first K-1 World Max champion title in 2005.

After two years, he again competed in the 2007 K-1 World Championship.

He showed excellent fighting skills in the tournament beating Gago Drago and then defeating Albert Kraus.

Finally, Souwer beat Masato to become the 2007 K-1 World Max Champion.

Rise of a Champion

After winning the 2007 K-1 World Max Championship, Andy again went head-to-head with Masato in Masato’s retirement match.

The match was at the Dynamite!! 2009 event, and Masato was victorious as Souwer lost the match.

Andy was scheduled to fight Naruepol Fairtex at Fighterzone Kickboxing World Series MAX in Singapore on February 25, 2012.

However, due to the reason of not settlement of payment by the promoters, the fight never happened.

Andy also competed in the Shoot Boxing World Tournament 2012 in Tokyo, Japan, on November 17, 2012.

Souwer defeated Kem Sitsongpeenong by majority decision with a total score of 58 – 55 in the quarter-final stage.

Additionally, Andy dominated the semi-finals and knocked out Hiroki Shishido to advance to the finals.

Finally, Souwer beat Henri van Opstal by unanimous decision (90 – 86) in the final to become the 2012 Shoot Boxing World Tournament champion.

Furthermore, Andy Souwer was invited to the K-1 World MAX 2012 World Championship in Athens, Greece, on December 15, 2012.

Souwer outpointed Andy Ristie in the quarter-finals with a convincing enough performance.

Unfortunately, Artur Kyshenko beat him in the semis to deny him a place in the finals in their fourth encounter.

Temporary Setback

On June 23, 2013, Andy Souwer went to Shoot Boxing 2013 – Act 4 as a leader of shoot boxer against a team of Pancrase fighters.

With Souwer saying about the Pancrase representative, “in Holland they are what we call B level fighters,” the event started with many controversies.

The founder and president, Caesar Takeshi, was upset and stormed out of the pre-fight press conference.

He was not happy about Pancrase’s disrespectful selection of opponents, and he claimed he could no longer bear to be part of the proceedings.

Kota Okazawa faced Souwer, and in round one, Okazawa was knocked out with a left hook.

Andy Souwer was scheduled to fight Maximo Suaraec at Enfusion Live: Tenerife.

In Tenerife, Spain, the fight was scheduled to take place on July 13, 2013, but he withdrew due to unknown reasons.

Souwer competed in the K-1 World MAX 2013 World Championship Tournament.

His performance was commendable, and he defeated Yasuhiro Kido in the Final to become the tournament’s winner in Mallorca, Spain, on September 14, 2013.

Injuries

Andy Souwer was scheduled to fight at the K-1 World Max 2013 World Championship Tournament Quarter-Finals – Part 1.

The fight was against Enriko Kehl and was going to take place in Foshan, China, on December 28, 2013.

However, Souwer suffered from a bout of appendicitis before the event, which meant he was not going to fight.

Unfortunately, he was admitted into the hospital due to his condition, where they had to perform a routine emergency surgical procedure to remove the troubled organ.

Moreover, his opponent Enriko Kehl also suffered numerous cuts in a fight with Buakaw one month earlier.

Both fighters were unable to compete and took some time off the sport.

Then, the fight was moved to K-1 World MAX 2013 World Championship Tournament Quarter-Finals – Part 2 and was matched with Shane Campbel.

A fight against Shemsi Beqiri was arranged with him at SuperPro Fight Night VI. However, due to appendicitis, Souwer was unable to compete.

He withdrew, and Beqiri fought Foad Sadeghi at SuperPro Fight Night VI in Basel, Switzerland, on January 25, 2014.

Comeback

Andy was desperate for a strong comeback and started training hard after his recovery.

The Souwer Power took some time to recover and was back to fighting.

He fought Tsuskur Midorikawa at Rikix: No Kick, No Life 2014 in Tokyo, Japan, on February 11, 2014.

Andy could not perform well and lost due to a split decision to Midorikawa.

Souwer was desperate for a comeback and started training for a boxing match.

He was scheduled for a boxing match against Paata Varduashvili in his hometown.

The fight against Paata was his professional boxing debut, and it took place on March 17, 2014.
