Santos Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez Barragán was born on 18th of July in 1990. He was born in Guadalajara, Jalisco to his parents Santos Alvarez (father) and Ana Maria Barragan (mother).

He was born on the outskirts of Guadalajara, but in an interview, he said that the fighter’s family was originally from Los Reyes, Michoacán.

His father owned a big farm, and Canelo learned how to ride a horse. He loved horse riding and continues to do it today.

Alvarez grew up in a packed family as he had six older brothers and one sister along with him.

Alvarez was the youngest of them all.

Canelo enjoyed his childhood learning boxing and doing horseback riding, but there was a time when his friends bullied him.

Other children would call and tease him with the name “Jícama con Chile” which translated to Mexican turnip with Chilli flakes. That was a trendy snack in Mexico.

Growing up alongside many brothers, he looked up to his oldest brother. When Rigoberto debuted in the professional boxing ring, Canelo wanted to follow in his footsteps, and he did so.

Canelo Alvarez: Career

At the age of 15, Canelo decided to turn professional and compete in a bigger league than he was in at that moment.

After one and a half years of turning professional, Canelo had recorded 11 knockout wins in the 13 matches he participated in.

Despite his opponents being much bigger and older than him, he knocked them out cold.

The fighter started his career with a bang. In 2006, he faced Miguel Vázquez, who was one of the most renowned fighters at that time.

Canelo was the underdog, and many predicted that it would be a crushing win for Miguel Vázquez, but it was the opposite.
