Cristian expressed an interest in sports from an early age. As a young child of age 5, he started playing tennis with his dad and gained tennis interest.

A fast learner, in particular, he instantaneously became the best tennis player among his age group.

Back in 2010, Cristian won the U-14 World Championship.

Just a year later, when Cristian turned 14, he won his first ITF (International Tennis Federation) Junior title and got into the Top10.

He got into ATP ranking in March 2012, and not to mention, in September 2012, he became the youngest Chilean player ever to play a Davis Cup match.

In Vina del Mar, where he played for his first tournament of 2013, Cristian won the ATP tour match and became the fifth player of age 16 or younger (since 2000) to do so.

A few months after this victory, he also won the 2013 Roland Garros Boys’ Singles title.

Cristian Garin: Professional Career

Afterward, at the age of 18, Cristian moved out of Chile and into Spain. Even at such young age, he had a change coach and resident with the dream of competing and winning big tournaments.

This was his first time living outside Santiago, Chile.

In 2018, he further moved to Argentina for a few months and worked with Andres Schneiter. But in the end, he returned to Chile and continued to stay with his parents.

Wild Card for the Royal Guard Open

In 2014, his first year as a professional tennis player, he obtained a wild card for the Royal Guard Open, ATP 250 tournament at his native land, Chile.

This clearly showed his potential in the field. The following week, he secured a qualifier spot in yet another ATP 250 tournament, the 2014 Copa Claro.

He ended this year in the rank position of 252. In January, he lost his singles and doubles match for Chile in the 2014 Davis Cup.

However, he did win two singles against Paraguay in March.

At the 2015 Davis Cup, he played for Chile and won his singles against Peru in January. Yet another victory continued for Cristian and Chile as he won two singles against Mexico in July.

Again, he won the doubles match against Venezuela in September. He ranked no. 321 this year.

Entry into the Top 200

Cristian finally entered the mark 200 in January. He played in the 2017 Davis Cup and won a singles match against the Dominican Republic.

The very next month, he was ranked no. 187.

In April, he won another single match but lost one against Colombia. With the loss in four sets against Jack Sock, he ended his year as no. 311.

Entry into the Top 100

2018 was a good year for Cristian as he ended the year with 15 consecutive victories and 3 back-to-back titles.

But his start wasn’t good as he couldn’t defend the previous year’s points and fell further behind in rank of 373 during the mid of January.

In the next three months, he reached 3 semifinals and 1 final out of the 6 presentations.

Similarly, in October, he won the challenger of Campinas. In the coming week, he won the title at the challenger of Santo Domingo.

After the tedious play of games, he rested for a week and headed out to play and win yet another challenger, Lima. With this, he placed no. 89 and entered the top 100.

First ATP Title Win

At the 2019 Australian Open, Cristian took part in a Grand Slam main draw. Being his first participation in the first Grand Slam of the year, he lost his sets.

He then entered the 2019 Davis Cup and lost against Austria. But he reverted to his games and won the decisive match. This win meant that the Chilean team had their first win in Europe over a half-century.

In the last week of February, Cristian got to his first ATP finals at the 2019 Brasil Open. He lost this title and also lost in the 2019 Miami Open. After losing, he trusted the process and started practicing for the Clay season.

In April 2019, he ended up winning the U.S. Clay Court Championships. Thus becoming the first Chilean player to win an ATP title since Fernando González won the 2009 Chilean Open.

A month later, he had another victory as he won the Bavarian Championships. Above all, he then managed to become the first Chilean player to have won an ATP title in Europe in more than a decade.

Being the number one tennis player for his country, Cristian started the year 2020 by representing his country at the 2020 ATP Cup. He lost three matches, and he went back home, lying in the last place.

But he did win his first Australian Open match this year. As a matter of fact, at the Cordoba Open, he won his third title. He went on to skip the Argentina Open due to his medical condition.

But he did bounce back at the 2020 Rio Open and won his first ATP 500 title. With this title in hand, he ranked in the top 20 of the ATP Tour world for the first time in his career.
