Rowing Career
Ginn started rowing at the age of 20. He did his senior club rowing from Merchantile Rowing Club.
State Rowing
He was selected for the state rowing youth eight for Victoria back in 1993 at the Australian Rowing Championships Interstate Regatta.
Drew Ginn again got the chance to row for Victoria’s youth eight in 1994. They won the intestate regatta and brought the trophy home.
Later, between 1995 and 2008, Ginn got selected in Victorian senior men’s eight to row in King’s Cup at the Interstate Regatta. Ginn rowed 3 of the races and got the victory in 2 of the King’s Cup.
National Representation in Rowing
In 1994, Ginn made his National representative debut when he rowed in the U23 Trans Tasman Series, a match between Australia and New Zealand.
In the series, He rowed for 3 matches, out of which Australia won two of the races.
And in 1995, he participated for the first time in the senior World Rowing Championships in Tampere, Finland.
Later in 1996, at the Atlanta Summer Olympics, Ginn won the gold medal in men’s coxless fours as a part of Australia’s Oarsome Foursome. It helped him secure a seat in the Australian men’s senior eight in 1997.
In the 1997 season, Ginn participated in different international championships, including the 1997 World Rowing Championships in France where Ginn, along with the Australian men’s eight, secured a third-place and won a bronze medal.
Ginn secured some more awards and titles with the Oarsome Foursome in the 1998 World Championships. They won men’s coxed four titles, and Ginn, along with Mike McKay, won the silver medal as a coxless pair.
In the 1999 World Championship held in St Catharines, Canada, Ginn secured the first position as a coxless pair with Tomkins.
After recovering from a back injury, Ginn, along with Tomkins in a coxless pair, secured the fourth position in the 2002 World championships.
Later in 2003, they won the world championships defending the then champions- Matthew Pinsent and James Cracknell. The pair again won the 2004 Summer Olympics.
In the 2006 World Rowing Championships, Ginn won the championship with Duncan Free.
Ginn continued to win the 2007 World Championship with Free despite the high odds of winning.

In 1996, Ginn won a gold medal in men’s coxless fours at the Atlanta Summer Olympics.
In 2008, Ginn and Free, his 2006 world championship partner, were selected to represent Australia in the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. They brought a gold medal home after winning the coxless pair title.
Again in 2012, Ginn, along with his team, won a silver medal in the Australian men’s coxless fours at the 2012 London Olympics.

Cycling Career
Ginn claims he had always cycled before entering the cycling career, but only as a part of his training.
Later after his injury, he started to cycle to stay healthy and fit. Ginn said, “I am healthy and keen to do something, and cycling seems like something plausible”.
Ginn is the fifth Olympic rower to have switched careers to cycling.
In his cycling career, Ginn won the 2009 Oceania trial championships. And later, in 2010, Ginn finished in the sixth position at the Australian national road championships.
Besides taking part in the competition, Ginn has cycled for charity as well. He had once attempted to cycle for 24-hours straight to break the record in the memory of his mother, who passed away due to cancer when Drew was only 12 years old.
Ginn had attempted the 24-hours straight cycling (Tour De Cure) through 836.36km to raise funds for cancer patients.
Drew Ginn: Injuries
Drew Ginn had faced a severe back injury back in 2000.
He almost had to give up the Beijing Olympics because of the injury. However, he had to row in the Olympics with severe pain in his back that almost passed him out.
After the diagnosis, doctors found that Ginn had ruptured a disc in his lower back, which caused him to finish a few of his last races in agony.
He had to go through a micro-discectomy to treat the pain. After the treatment, he was told to rest for 6 weeks.
Ginn and his rowing coxless pair Tomkins had planned to contest in the 2000 Summer Olympics. Unfortunately, Ginn’s bad back started to react, and he had to keep himself away from rowing for the time being.
Due to the bad back and the injury, Ginn had to retire early while his then rowing partners are still rowing for the country.
