Early Life

Although he was born in Armenia (previously the Soviet Union), he, his father, and his older brother went to Italy illegally when he was thirteen years old.

Initially, they were homeless in Milan but were later taken by a family in Gorizia.

Then he settled in Italy and was united with his mother, sister, and brother, a world champion boxer.

Jean-Claude Van Damme, as well as Bruce Lee, inspired Petrosyan. Therefore, he started training Muay Thai at just fourteen years.

Giorgio Petrosyan: Career

Early Career

Giorgio started as a bantamweight at sixteen and defeated a local Italian fighter in his February 2002 debut while breaking his toes in the process.

Shortly after, he turned professional and started competing under Muay Thai rules for the next five years.

Moreover, in his first title fight on November 9, 2003, a third-round knockout over Gionata Zarbo earned him the title of Muay Thai Association (MTA) Italian national champion. 

Petrosyan won the MTA European 65 kg/143 lb Championship by defeating Fabio Pinca in 2004.

Also, in February 2005, he defended his belt with a win over Shemsi Beqiri in his hometown of Gorizia.

However, he fought to a draw with three-time Lumpinee Stadium champion Pinsinchai in Bologna, Italy, on April 10.

After that, Giorgio competed in the Italian Extreme IV four-man tournament in Modena on April 1, 2006, stopping all three opponents with low kicks.

On June 10, 2006, he knocked out Benito Caupain to win the Kombat League World Muay Thai Championship in Nova Gorica.

Later on, Petrosyan successfully defended his title three times, beating Johnny Tancray, Koing Frankie Hudders, and Imro Main.

When Petrosyan moved to the middleweight division, he won the eight-man 72 kg/158 lb tournament at Janus Fight Night 2006. 

Kickboxing Breakthrough

Petrosyan suffered the first loss of his career to Nonthanan Por at the Lumpinee Stadium in 2007 in Bangkok, Thailand.

Eventually, he bounced back with back-to-back wins over Arslan Magomedov and Sadio Cissoko at K-1 Italy Oktagon 2007.

After that, he fought the biggest fight of his career against Buakaw Por. Pramuk.

Unfortunately, Pramuk WMC World Junior Middleweight (-69.8 kg/154 lb) Championship ended in a split draw, so Buakaw retained his title.

Similarly, he won the Janus Fight Night 2007, beating Jose Reis, Abdallah Mabel, and Marco Pique in the quarter-finals, semi-finals, and finals.

In early 2008, Petrosyan went to Kickboxing when he signed with the It’s Showtime organization.

He won on his debut against Luis Reis at Balans: It’s Showtime 75 MAX Trophy Final 2008 in ‘s-Hertogenbosch, the Netherlands on March 15, 2008.

Petrosyan beat Mikel Colaj and Chris Ngimbi at K-1 Italy Oktagon 2008 in Miland and Amsterdam’s K-1 World Grand Prix 2008.

K-1 World Championships

On January 31, 2009, Petrosyan beat David Javakhia to take the World Kickboxing Network Welterweight Oriental Championship.

After that, Petrosyan beat Andy Souwer by unanimous decision on March 14, 2009.

Giorgio maintained a 53-1-2 record and beat two-time K-1 MAX champion Souwer, so he was invited to the annual K-1 World MAX Tournament.

In the K-1 World MAX 2009 World Championship in Japan, he beat Dzhabar Askerov, Albert Kraus, and Yuya Yamamoto in the opening round, quarter-final stage, and the semi-finals.

Even though he had an injured hand, he won the K-1 World MAX Tournament Championship.

Petrosyan’s broken hand kept him out for some time, but he returned to the ring.

After that, he defended his WKN intercontinental title against Mohamed Diaby in Turin on January 30, 2010.

Then, he made his comeback to K-1 and entered into the K-1 World MAX 2010 Tournament.

In the sixteen round, Giorgio won against Vitaly Gurkov and beat Albert Kraus in the KWM 2010 World Championship quarter-finals.

Injuries and Temporary Setbacks

Petrosyan could not participate in the It’s Showtime “Fast & Furious 70MAX” in Brussels, Belgium, on September 25, 2011, due to a hand injury.

Giorgio had hand surgery and then returned to fighting with a split decision win over Zenben Diaz It’s Showtime 53 in Tenerife, Spain, on November 12, 2011.

Petrosyan terminated his contract with Its Showtime in January 2012 as K-1 owed him money for winning the 2010 K-1 World MAX tournament.

After becoming a free agent, the kickboxer returned to Italy to fight independently. He beat Abraham Roqueñi at Yokkao Extreme 2012 in Milan on January 21, 2012.

Then, in a match with Artur Kyshenko at Oktagon 2012 in Milan on March 24, 2012, Petrosyan again won.

Strong Comeback with Glory

Giorgio signed with the recently founded Glory organization and defeated Fabio Pincha at Glory 1: Stockholm on May 26, 2012.

Then Petrosyan TKOed by Hollenback in the quarter-finals on Glory 3: Rome on November 3, 2012.

After that, he defeated Davit Kiria in the semis and beat Robin van Roosmalen to win his third major tournament.

Petrosyan knocked out Ole Laursen with a high kick in Trieste on March 2, 2013.

He quickly countered and defeated Hafid El Boustati at Glory 7: Milan on April 20, 2013.

Giorgio got knocked out for the first time by Andy Ristie in the semi-finals of the Glory 12: New York – Lightweight World Championship in New York, US, on November 23, 2013.

Similarly, Andy Ristie went on to win the tournament, and that knockout put an end to Petrosyan’s forty-two fight, six-year undefeated streak.

After that, Petrosyan made a comeback by defeating Artem Pashporin for the W5 71kg world title on February 18, 2017, at W5 Grand Prix Kitek in Russia.

Giorgio Petrosyan faced Amansio Paraschiv at Bellator Kickboxing 5 on April 8, 2017. He won the fight by unanimous decision.

Petrosyan defeated Chris Ngimbi. Then he became the new ISKA Super Welterweight K-1 World Champion.

He defeated Chingiz Allazov on July 14, 2018, at Bellator Kickboxing 10 in Rome, Italy.

ONE Championship

Petrosyan defeated Jo Nattawut in the co-main event for ONE: Heroes of Honor in Manila, the Philippines, in April 2018.

In ISKA Super Welterweight K-1 Rules World Championship, he beat Japanese kickboxer Atsushi Tamefusa to defend his title.

Petrosyan faced Phetmorakot Petchyindee Academy in the Grand Prix Quarter-Finals on May 17, 2019, at ONE Championship: Enter the Dragon.

The fight resulted in Petrosyan’s loss by the split decision; however, later, it was reversed to a no-contest because of illegal clinching.

On July 12, 2019, Petrosyan defeated Phetmorakot in a rematch of the previous match to advance to the Grand Prix Semi-Finals.

He beat Jo Nattwut by KO in the first round at ONE Championship: Dreams of Gold on August 16, 2019. In doing so, he advanced to the final.

Petrosyan beat Samy Sana in the Grand Prix Final to become the ONE Kickboxing Featherweight World Grand Prix Champion and won USD 1 million on October 13, 2019.

After that, he faced and defeated former Glory and Kunlun Fight champion Davit Kiria at ONE Championship: Fists of Fury on February 26, 2021.
