In 1978, Lendl began his professional career and reached his first top-level singles final in 1979. Similarly, he won seven solo titles in 1980. 

Ivan was a major force behind his country’s squad. His abilities and skills led the Czechoslovak team to win the World Cup in 1981.

In 1983, he won seven more events; nonetheless, he had yet to win a Grand Slam championship during his early career.

Ivan reached his first Grand Slam final, losing to Björn Borg in five sets at the French Open.

In 1984, Ivan won his first Grand Slam title at the French Open, defeating John McEnroe in a marathon final.

The tennis player won the French Open in 1986 and 1987 and the season-ending Masters Grand Prix titles in 1986 and 1987, defeating Becker in straight sets in 1986 and Wilander in three sets in 1987. 

From 1985 through 1987, Lendl’s match-winning rate was over 90%.

Lendl reached ten consecutive Grand Slam singles semifinals from the 1985 US Open to the 1988 Australian Open, which Federer broke at the 2007 Australian Open.

Wimbledon was the only Grand Slam singles title Lendl never won. 

He reached the final twice after reaching the semi-finals in 1983 and 1984.

Later Years

He skipped the French Open once more to concentrate on Wimbledon, but he lost in the third round to David Wheaton and never won the tournament.

Due to chronic back discomfort, Lendl announced his retirement from professional tennis on December 21, 1994, at 34. 

His last professional match was three and a half months before his retirement, in which he lost in the US Open’s second round in 1994.

The tennis player, nicknamed “The Terminator,” won a massive 94 ATP singles titles and 6 doubles titles and earned approximately 22 million dollars for his efforts.

In addition, the champion got inducted into the Tennis Hall of Fame in 2001.

On December 31, 2011, Lendl was named Andy Murray’s coach.
