Rosie MacLennan: Early Life, Family, and Education

The Canadian Gymnast, Rosie MacLennan, was born on August 28, 1988, in King City, Ontario.  

Her parents’ names are Jane and John MacLennan. Rosie grew up alongside her three elder siblings Matthew, Michael, and Katherine.

When Rosie was seven years old, she tagged along with her siblings and started gymnastics with several other sports. Thus, her dream to win the Olympics started at the age of eight.

She had her idol who made her dream about her Olympic appearance. Her idols were her grandfather Lorne Patterson, a gymnast, Canadian trampolinist Karen Cockburn, and Canadian ice hockey player Hayley Wickenheiser.  

Moreover, talking about her education, she graduated from King City Secondary School in 2006. Also, she was a cheerleader during her final year.

Rosie MacLennan: Career

Rosie MacLennan took up the sport of trampoline gymnastics at the age of seven and began competing at age nine.

By the time she was eleven, she was already competing internationally and was qualified for her first World Age Group competition.

Back then, when Karen Cockburn won the bronze in the 2000 Olympics, Rosie was only 12-years-old.

Moreover, watching her mentor growing up and competing at the Olympics lit a fire inside MacLennan and gave her the determination to follow her own Olympics dreams.

The trampolinist’s first multi-sport experience was at the  2007 Pan American Games.

She won her first silver in 2007 in Rio de Janeiro before stepping up to win gold at Guadalajara in 2011.

What’s more, she successfully defended that gold medal at home in Toronto in 2015.

Similarly, in 2005, MacLennan made her world championship debut and won her first bronze medal in 2007 for an individual game.

Then she added another bronze in 2010 before winning silver in 2011 Birmingham and 2014 Daytona Beach.

Finally, in 2013 Sofia, Bulgaria, and the 2018 St.Petersburg, Russia World Championships, she won a gold medal in an individual match.

In the Pan American Championships, she has won 3 medals in individual events.

Career Milestones

Rosie MacLennan’s first Olympic debut was in 2004, Beijing. She walked the opening ceremony stadium with Jason Burnett and Karen Cockburn, who brought medals back to their hometown, Canada. 

However, for Rosie MacLennan, her first taste of Olympic action led to a commendable seventh place.

But for her, just finishing in the top 10 wasn’t enough. The entire experience and its result motivated and inspired her to push herself harder. 

Thus, MacLennan’s next opportunity to win a medal was in London 2012. There her blood and sweat to win gold would pay off.

And so it did; she won her first Olympic gold medal at the 2012 London Games and became the first Canadian to win a gold medal in trampoline history with a score of 57.305. 

However, her journey to the 2016 Olympics was not an easy trip. As of July 2015, she suffered a concussion injury three weeks before the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. 

Even though MacLennan suffered a concussion, she didn’t lose hope and love for the sport and performed in the 2016 Olympics.

Rest is the history; Rosie became the first Canadian athlete to defend an Olympic title at the Summer Games successfully.

However, as for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Rosie finished fourth. 

Apart from gymnastics, Rosie also is a motivational speaker and a strong activist for health promotion.

Injury

Just as Canadian trampoline gymnast Karen Cockburn injured her knee, Rosie MacLennan also suffered from the injury.

Rosie suffered a concussion injury in July 2015, three weeks before the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto, Canada.  

Again in August 2015, she suffered from the second concussion when she was accidentally hit on the head by a car trunk.

Due to her concussion, she suffered from a loss of spatial awareness in the air, which shattered her confidence, headaches, memory issues, speech issues, and anxiety. 

As per its consequences, she ruled herself out of the 2017 World Championships in Sofia, Bulgaria, because of a lingering neck injury. 

Also, Rosie MacLennan broke her ankle in 2019, weeks before the Tokyo Olympics.

In addition, she said in an interview that she landed awkwardly on the side of the trampoline at a World Cup in Minsk, Belarus, on April 21, 2019.

And sustained a minor fracture in her fibula and a more serious one in her talus bone.

Gold-Medal Olympian Rosie MacLennan got married at the age of 30.

She got married to a former University of Toronto basketball star, Nick Snow, in 2018. 

Since they were pursuing degrees in physical education and health at the University of Toronto, Rosie and Nick have been together and were an active and adventurous couple.

Later in 2016, on a New Year’s Eve, Nick proposed to Rosie. After that, they got married on June 16, 2018, in Baysville, Ontario.
