Sam Kendricks: Inspiration

The Olympic athlete’s biggest inspiration was his own father, a former Marine pilot and a horseman.

Before settling in Missippi, his father served America on three continents.

When Sam was 13 years old,  his father, Scott, worked as a field and track coach at Oxford High school.

The sport of horse and track & field was a lifelong passion of Scott Kendricks.

Therefore, Scott was well aware of his son’s need to remain competitive in the field and track.

So, Sam’s father guided him in the same way as horse wear blinders to avoid distraction.

Fortunately, Sam focused on being a professional pole vaulter.

In addition to that, Sam’s father used to train Sam along with the girl’s pole vault training group.

The team’s goal was to break the school record that was daybreak 13’7”.

However, his school owned a single-pole, but it didn’t stop Sam’s passion for being a pole vaulter.

As a result of his determination, Sam became the eleven-time winner of MSSAA state meets.

Besides his father, Kendrick’s other inspiration was Wladyslaw Kozakiewicz, aka Wally.

Wally is a 1980 Olympics gold medalist who is best known as Polish Vaulter.

Polish vaulter was able to break two world records in the 1980 Olympics held in Moscow.

Sam studied Wally and his techniques which became the blueprint for Sam.

Besides, he was also inspired by his mom. His mother was the Associate Dean of Engineering at the University of Mississippi, USA.

Therefore, his mother could find quick solutions to any problems that came their way.

As a result, Sam grew up in a very positive, creative environment. Such an environment helped Sam to progress and flourish as he grew older and wiser.

Pole Vaulter:

A 31 Years Old professional pole vaulter spent his early career devoting himself to pole vault.

During his junior year, Kendrick jumped 15′ 4.25 in the New Balance Nationals Outdoor. Similarly, in his senior year, he jumped 17′.  

Therefore, Sam created the new record as 17′ was the highest height vault ever by a high schooler.

Moreover, Sam also got an ROTC scholarship. Besides, the athlete also became a part of the track team at Ole Miss.

Furthermore, he competed as Rebel for 3 years, and within three years, Sam was able to win two national titles.

No Breaking Point

As Sam Kendricks was endeavoring something big, it was time for a brand new carbon poll as well.

A new carbon poll was needed because the old poll in which Sam used to practice did not suit his jumping style.

Since the old polls were not suitable for Sam, a series of five poles broke during practice within a short period.

So, Sam’s team reached out to renowned Bruce Caldwell to solve the problem.

Bruce Caldwell was the former founder and owner of ESSX poles. His company was best known for making the best poles.

Kendricks personal best was 19′, so the company made the pole according to the need of the pole vaulter.

However, Kendrick was still unsure about the pole made by Bruce and Beto. So, he tried poll from other companies as well.

Bruce and Beto made another pole for Sam and challenged him to break the pole.

And, to his surprise, Sam jumped his personal best without breaking a sweat.

In addition to that, a new partnership and friendship were created between Bruce, Sam, and Beto. 

First Lieutenant

Sam Kendrick is also serving as the first lieutenant in the Army Reserve.

Similarly, Kendricks was given a scholarship from the Marines in Ole Miss.

However, at the same time, Sam was a member of the most prominent collegiate unit in the U.S., the Rebel Battalion.
