Stephen Hendry: Early Life and Education

Stephen Hendry was born on the 13th January of 1969 in Scotland.

Despite being born in South Queensferry, West Lothian, he spent his childhood in Edinburgh and Dalgety Bay, Fife.

Hendry did most of his schooling at Inverkeithing High School, located in Fife.

Then, at the age of 14, he exchanged his school after moving to Kirkliston, Edinburgh, where he attended Queensferry High School.

He resided in South Queensferry during the start of his career as a snooker player.

However, it was in 1981 when he first tested his hand in snooker at age 12.

His father had gifted him a small snooker table for Christmas, leading him to start playing the sport.

Hendry began competing in competitions at age 14 and won the U-16 Scottish Championship.

Similarly, in 1985 after making his name in the Scottish Amateur Championship, he officially became professional.

He was the youngest snooker player ever to turn professional at age 16. Further, he chose entrepreneur Ian Doyle as his manager.

It was in the 1989/90 championship season when Hendry dominated the snooker world.

Moreover, he won Scottish Masters, Asian Open, The Masters, 1989 UK Championship & Dubai Classic.

In 1990, he won his first-ever world championship, where he outshined fellow player Jimmy White with scores 18-12.

Unfortunately, Hendry performed rather badly in the 2000/01 season and was defeated in many competitions.

As a result, he didn’t manage to win any ranking titles that season. 

Meanwhile, later in 2005, he won the Malta Cup, and the following year landed in the finals of the UK Championship.

Retirement

The world went to shock when suddenly, in May 2012, Hendry announced his retirement from the snooker games.

He went on to explain that he was suffering from YIPS which means his skills were disappearing.

Hendry started losing his motor skills and was having difficulty in making decisions. He further explained that he wasn’t satisfied with his gameplay.

Also, he couldn’t balance his professional & personal life properly.

As this affected his physical and mental health, he decided it was time to retire and focus on his health.

It is said that he firstly suffered from yips symptom in 2000.

After receiving an invitational tour card, he decided to play for two seasons on the 2020 World Snooker Tour.

But it was in 2021, he returned to the professional snooker field, making his re-entry in March at the Gibraltar Open happening in England.

Despite making a century break during the game, he lost the first round to Matthew Selt.

In the first round qualifiers games for World Championship, he lost and won one game each. So, unfortunately, he didn’t make it to the qualifiers.

Stephen Hendry: Achievement and Titles

Hendry received The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE) award in 1994 for his excellent contributions in the snooker field.

During the 2021 Snooker Masters Champion, Hendry made a rather stereotypical remark about the young Chinese player Yan Bingtao.

While commentating on the live match, he foolishly said that the Chinese players’ mistakes make look like a system failure.

However, Bingtao had made a mistake that seemed clumsy to Hendry.

Further, he said it’s interesting to see the Chinese Players play, but they don’t know how to function when they make errors.

He referred to them as robots which were unacceptable to the masses.

Hendry was formerly married to showjumper Mandy Tart for 19 years before they decided to separate. The estranged couple first met at a young age at a holiday camp.

They had known each other for 30 years as they met during their teenage years.

After their marriage, they decided to reside in Auchterarder, Scotland.
