Early Life, Family, and Education

Tom Dumoulin was born on November 11, 1990, in Maastricht. Tom was born to John Dumoulin and Erna Dumoulin.

His father, John, was a Health, Medicine, and Life Sciences teacher, Obstetrics & Gynecology at the Maastricht University.

Before his passion for racing developed, Tom wanted to study medicine and become a doctor.

But after failing to secure a position at the medical school, he started studying Health Sciences. He soon dropped out and instead pursued cycle racing for a year.

Career

Cycling was not the career Tom originally wanted to choose. But once he got the taste of it, he has never looked back ever since.

In 2010, Dumoulin competed at the Grand Prix of Portugal and won the race despite never having ridden a trial bicycle before.

Later that year, he also won a time trial stage of the Girobio.

Project 1t4i 

In 2012, he turned professional with the Dutch Project 1t4i team.

Although his beginning was shaky, he luckily made his marks in major races and time trials.

Furthermore, he made his tour debut in 2012, riding the Vuelta an España.

In June of 2014, he won Dutch National Time Trial Championships.

Later, in September, he also won a bronze in the UCI World Time Trial Championships in Ponferrada, Spain.

In 2015, he took his first success of the season by winning the final individual time trial on the Tour of the Basque Country.

Unfortunately, on stage 3 of Tour de France, he was involved in a massive, high-speed crash and abandoned the race.

After recovering from his injuries, he went on to participate in 20 more stages.

In December, he won the Gerrit Schulte Trophy, the award for the best Dutch cyclist of the year. In addition to this, in 2016, he also won the opening time trial on home soil in Apeldoorn in Giro d’Italia.

Furthermore, he also rode in Tour de France. Despite having a broken wrist, he successfully won a silver medal in the time trial at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

2017 was one of the highlights of his career. That year, he became the first Dutch male cyclist to win the Giro d’Italia and the first to win a Grand Tour since Joop Zoetemelk.

As a result of his victory, he was appointed a Knight of the Order of Orange-Nassau by King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands and Limburgian by Merit.

In addition to this, he also received the Honorary Gold Medal of the City of Maastrict.

World Championships

Dumoulin won September’s Individual time trial at the World Championships in Bergen, Norway. This was his first individual world championship victory.

In 2018 he entered the Giro d’Italia as the defending champion, and he finished second overall behind Chris Froome. He was considered one of the favorites for overall victory.

Unfortunately, in 2019 he missed the Tour de France because of his injuries in his previous race.

However, In August, he joined Team Jumbo–Visma on a three-year contract from 2020 onwards. After that, he took an indefinite leave in January 2021 to revive his health.

Tom intended to return to racing in June at 2021 Tour de Suisse and prepare for the 2020 Summer Olympics. 

All his passion and dedication paid off when Dumoulin won a silver medal in Men’s Individual Time Trial Road Cycling at the Olympics.
