Blunt, the son of Neva Dora and politician Leroy Blunt, was born on January 10, 1950, in Niangua, Missouri. [Reference needed] In 1970, he graduated from Southwest Baptist University with a B.A. in history.

He graduated with a master’s in history from Southwest Missouri State University two years later. He was granted three Vietnam War draft deferments while he was a student. From 1970 to 1972, Blunt taught high school history at Marshfield High School.

He subsequently worked as an adjunct professor at Drury University and Southwest Baptist University. From 1993 to 1996, he presided over his alma institution, Southwest Baptist University.
