Blunt, the son of Neva Dora and politician Leroy Blunt, was born on January 10, 1950, in Niangua, Missouri. [Reference needed] In 1970, he graduated from Southwest Baptist University with a B.A. in history.
He graduated with a master’s in history from Southwest Missouri State University two years later. He was granted three Vietnam War draft deferments while he was a student. From 1970 to 1972, Blunt taught high school history at Marshfield High School.
