Left-handed batsman Bhanuka Rajapaksa was born in Colombo and is a distant relative of former Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa. The southpaw, who also enjoys swimming and squash, picked cricket over all other sports.

Bhanuka began playing cricket for the Royal College Colombo in his college years. Bhanuka played an important role on his college squad before making his T20 and List A debuts in 2009 for the Schools Invitation XI and Sinhalese Sports Club, respectively. He then made it into Sri Lanka’s U-19 team.

After most key players declined to play in the series for security reasons, the selectors appointed him to Sri Lanka’s T20 squad for the Pakistan tour in September 2019. Bhanuka wasted no time in dazzling everyone with his batting prowess. He scored a fluid 77 in the second T20I and contributed to a historic third-wicket partnership for Sri Lanka. Rajapaksa demonstrated his batting prowess by finishing with the most runs scored in the three-match T20I series.
