Just before the time skip, Lord Lyonel was raised to the office of Hand of the King for King Viserys Targaryen in the House of the Dragon. Ser Harwin Strong, Larys’ older brother, is a knight.

Ser Harwin is also Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen’s current lover, which has fueled allegations in the Targaryen court that he is the illegitimate father of her three children, which we first see in episode 6.

What Has Larys Been Up To?

Larys has made contact with Queen Alicent Hightower, accurately identifying King Viserys’ wife as a key figure in the Targaryen empire’s political maneuverings.

The Queen is very worried about Rhaenyra’s bastard offspring, ostensibly for the Targaryens’ legacy. Still, it’s hardly a stretch to argue it’s really for her benefit, with the hope that her eldest son, Aegon, will be declared heir.

Taking Alicent’s privately expressed worries to heart, Larys prepares a plan in which a gang of men under his leadership burn Harrenhal castle, killing Lord Lyonel and Ser Harwin in the process.

Why Does Larys Strong Kill Harwin And Lyonel? Death Cause Revealed

Larys Strong chose to kill his father and brother for a variety of reasons.

For starters, Queen Alicent Hightower had stated that she missed her father’s advice, Ser Otto Hightower (Rhys Ifans), Lord Lyonel’s predecessor as the King’s Hand.

Larys pulled them closer together by removing Lord Lyonel from his position permanently. He was eager to please the Queen and further ingratiate himself with her while maintaining control over her.

Second, slaying Lord Lyonel opens up the seat of Harrenhal for inheritance.

This is also why Larys would benefit from killing his older brother, Ser Harwin, who is his father’s heir and stands to inherit the vast castle and its surrounding lands.

Furthermore, because Ser Harwin was well recognized as Princess Rhaenyra’s lover and the likely father of her three sons, he was a devoted supporter of the Princess and killing him eliminated another possible opponent of Alicent’s.

Of course, none of this would matter if Larys cared for his father and brother, which he does not.

The series hasn’t done much to deepen the Strong family’s connections, but previous sequences showed them all getting along.
