On April 12, 1981, Tulsi Gabbard was born in Leloaloa, Maoptasi County, on Tutuila, the largest island of American Samoa. She was the fourth of Carol Gabbard’s five children with her husband, Mike Gabbard. Gabbard’s family relocated to Hawaii in 1983 when she was two years old, having previously lived there in the late 1970s.
Gabbard was reared in a multiracial family with lineage from Samoa and Europe. Tulsi’s mother was raised in Michigan after being born in Indiana. Her father is of Samoan and European descent; he was born in American Samoa and spent his early years in Hawaii and Florida.
Gabbard was partially educated by the principles of the Science of Identity Foundation (SIF) sect and Chris Butler, the sect’s spiritual head. She claimed that Butler’s writing continues to direct her. Gabbard referred to Butler as her guru dev in 2015. (roughly, “spiritual teacher”).
The ex-husband and spouse of Gabbard have both been active in the neighborhood. Gabbard has been hesitant to discuss the SIF in public. Except for two years spent at an all-girls missionary school in the Philippines, Gabbard received her high school education at home.
