He began his career in hockey at a very young age with the Makhram Waxers of the Ontario Minor Hockey Association. He subsequently played in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) for the Sarnia Sting, where he established multiple records and was voted the league’s most valuable player in 2008.

In 2008, he was first selected by The Tampa Bay Lightning; later in the 2009 season, he made his  NHL debut and soon established himself as one of the league’s finest players.
