Ondra was born to his father, Miroslav Ondra, and his mother, Eva Ondrova, who holds the nationality of the Czech Republic.

Growing along with his parents, who were both involved in climbing, Adam also began climbing at the early age of six.

At the age of sixteen in 2009, Adam competed in the Lead Climbing World Cup and won the competition beating Spanish Patxi Usobiaga and Japanese Sachi Amma.

Likewise, in 2010, he won another title, Bouldering World Cup, and became the first athlete in history to win the World Cup both in Lead Climbing and Bouldering.

Ondra continued to climb the big rocks of success as in 2011, Adam was sighted 8c+ (5.14c), becoming the second person after Patxi Usobiaga.

The following year in 2012, Ondra stepped up for redpointed Change, a grade of 9b+ (5.15c) for the first time in Hanshelleren Cave, Flatanger, Norway.

First Ascent and Hardest Routes

In 2013, Adam made his first ascent with Chris Sharma, which took nine weeks of work.

However, the climb of Fight or Flight was succeeded in the second ascent 9b (5.15b).

Ondra succeeded his second ascent of The Dawn Wall with 9a (5.14d) on November 21, 2016. The route was considered the most challenging big wall in the world.

Likewise, Adam set a new highpoint record of the Black Diamond Project the following year, the most challenging indoor sport route globally.

The same year on September 3, 2017, he climbed Silence in the Hanshelleren Cave, which was unclimbed and the hardest project in the world.

Later the project was named Project Hard with a grade of 9c (5.15d).

In 2018, Adam was sighted on Just do it, a historic 8c+ route which was bolted by Alan Watts in 1989 and ascended in by Jean-Baptiste Tribout in 1992.

Recent Career and 2020 Summer Olympics

After Ondra couldn’t qualify at the 2019 IFSC Climbing World Championships, he did his best and succeeded in the 2020 Summer Olympics.

However, after reaching the finals, he fell ill and couldn’t compete in the Olympics final.

In 2021, Adam came back stronger with a win in the bouldering discipline at the IFSC World Cup in Meiringen.
