John Dorsey, who from 2013 to 2017 discovered talented players through the draft, was replaced by Veach. The Chiefs required someone who could do more than just identify talent.

Dorsey’s contract extensions to safety Eric Berry and the pass rusher Justin Houston did more harm than good for this team.

After Houston and Berry had outstanding seasons in 2014 and 2016, respectively, the former chief manager of the Chiefs waited to give them those extensions, giving the players the upper hand in contract talks.

In place of John Dorsey, Brett Veach was named the eighth general manager in the Kansas City Chiefs’ history five years ago.

Brett Veach Career As A General Manager

In August 2017, Veach made his first trade as general manager to acquire linebacker, Reggie Ragland.

Veach signed linebacker Anthony Hitchens and wide receiver Sammy Watkins in free agency the next offseason.

While Watkins fought with injuries during his time with the organization, he still contributed to the offense during that time, particularly in the postseason, even though Hitchens and Ragland fell short of expectations.

In the NFL, a new general manager frequently tries to leave their mark and have an influence as soon as possible.

Veach began to be more active as a general manager in the 2019 offseason. He acquired Emmanuel Ogbah in trade and added Alex Okafor after realigning his defense to a 4-3.

Defensive end Frank Clark and a third-round pick were purchased by Veach from Seattle the week of the 2019 NFL Draft in exchange for a first, third, and second-round pick the following year.

Despite being underwhelmed by a five-year, $105.5 million contract that has undergone two contract restructurings, Clark has excelled in the two postseasons in which the Chiefs have advanced to the Super Bowl.

Despite the slow start, Veach started performing in a manner that impressed many Chiefs supporters during the 2019 season. He hired defensive lineman Mike Pennel, guard Stefen Wisniewski, and defensive end Terrell Suggs in the middle of the season.

Brett struck gold with the class of the 2021 draft, selecting linebacker Nick Bolton, center Creed Humphrey, and guard Trey Smith.

The Chiefs have won 60 regular-season and eight postseason games since Veach was appointed general manager of the franchise five years ago, the most NFL team during that period.

The Kansas City Chiefs should have even greater success over the following five years if Veach maintains his current path.
