During his career with the Indiana Pacers, he would have an average point per game of 19.0 and earn the Rookie of the Year’s title in 1987.

He also earns the nickname of “Rifleman’, as a result of his shooting skills.

With the Timberwolves

After a 7 year long career with the Indiana Pacers, Person was then traded into the Minnesota Timberwolves in 1992, where he lost his shine.

.The tradeoff seemed to affect him negatively, as while he was in the Timberwolves, he had his record low points per game of 11.6. It resulted in him sticking with this team for only two years.

San Antonio Spurs

After this low point, he was traded into the San Antonio Spurs, where he once again regained his charm and started living up to his name once again.

He averaged a much lower point per game while with the Spurs, mostly due to him being a reserve player.

He had a score of 9.5 while with the Spurs and yet set many records, like being the reserve player with the most number of three-pointers in the tournament.

His later seasons were also hampered by an injury he sustained while in the United States Army. He missed an entire season from 1996–97 due to the injury.

Other teams

After 3 seasons with the Spurs, Person moved on to find a career with a few other teams, which led him to play a season with Charlotte Hornets Seattle SuperSonics.

He has a game score of 6.1 and 2.8 with Charlotte Hornets and Seattle SuperSonics, respectively.

Person took that as a sign, and soon his career as a player was at an end when the Los Angeles Lakers decided to waive him from their roster.

So he retired his jersey to his alma mater Auburn University and ended his career as a player.

Career as a Coach

Cleveland Cavaliers and Indiana Pacers

After retiring as a player, Person decided to use his skill, passion, and lifelong experience with basketball as a coach.

He joined John Lucas, then head coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers, and worked for the 2000-2001 season as an assistant.

Also, as a player relations assistant and scout to his first team, the Indiana Pacers, which was then managed by Donnie Walsh.

He then got a position as a head coach within the Indiana Pacers.

He was far from satisfied with this position and tried twice for a head coach position at the Pacers and the Sacramento Kings, and failed both times.

Sacramento Kings

This resulted in Reggie Theus’s firing, the head coach and close friend of Person, in 2008.

Break

After trying his luck at becoming head coach of the Chicago Bulls, which failed and Person decided to take a break for a few months.

By this time, he had spent over two decades in the industry. He had worked his way up as a player and then as a coach for multiple teams. So, Chuck decided to spend some time with his family.

Los Angeles Lakers

In 2009, Phil Jackson invited him to become the assistant to the Los Angelos Lakers’ head coach.

This was a new start for his career, and soon unsatisfied with this position, he tried to become the head coach at his old university’s college team.

After being rejected by his former university basketball team, he stuck to his job at the Lakers.

He worked at the Lakers until 2013, after which he was fired due to a gradual change in the head management.

International Career

After being without work for a few months, Person then became a coaching staff for the Jeonju KCC Egis, a team-based all the way in South Korea and competing in the Korean Basketball league!

Chuck Person: Controversies

NCAA Division I men’s basketball corruption scandal

In 2017, Person would become embroiled in a college basketball corruption scandal involving multiple coaches all across the NCAA.

It was discovered by the FBI and the United States Attorney’s office for the Southern District of New York.

It was a nationwide investigation into bribery and corruption in the NCAA.

It focuses on those associated with the Adidas brand and involving multiple other players and coaches.

Around 10 people were initially arrested on counts of corruption, money laundering, and wire fraud, as well as 15 players.

These 10 people consisted of various college coaches, including Chuck Person, and through him, Auburn University was also investigated.

The university decided to hire an external law firm to conduct an internal investigation of Chuck and the players on their behalf.

Chuck was found to have accepted bribes worth over $90,000 from Rashan Michel, a tailor who serviced many professional athletes.

He would pay the money to have Person steer potential clients his way. He was also accused of bribing his own players up to $20k.

As a result of this controversy, Auburn University promptly suspended Person indefinitely.

Later, they fired him in the wake of the decision by the jury. The jury found him guilty.

However, the judge refused to give him any prison time, citing his long history of charity.

Divorce

In the wake of the scandal, his wife filed for divorce, forcing him to pay child support and alimony.

This left him essentially broke. Instead, the judge decided to relegate him to 200 hours of community service, telling him to “keep up the good work.”

In the end, poor financial decisions became his downfall, and soon after, he retired to a quiet, humble life; however, he still coaches privately.

He always said, “These people haven’t seen the last of my face. If I go down, I’m going down standing up.”
