Cooper Rush was born on November 21, 1993. 

Rush was recruited by Lansing Catholic High School in Lansing, Michigan, which has a student population of just over 500, and became a three-year starter as quarterback for the football team. 

He led his team to consecutive unblemished regular seasons in 2010 and 2011. In 2011, he led his team to a state runner-up finish.

In Division 5 regional championship game versus Dowagiac Union High School, he set Michigan state records with 5 touchdown passes in one quarter and 8 for the game.

Despite having 300 passing yards and three touchdowns, the squad was defeated by Powers Catholic High School in the finals, 26-56.

As a senior, he was named All-State, the Associated Press Division 5/6 Player of the Year, and the ESPN Michigan Gatorade Player of the Year.

He graduated with 7,248 passing yards (455-for-734, 62 percent completion rate), 80 passing touchdowns, 1,438 rushing yards, and 27 rushing touchdowns.

Cooper Rush, a three-star recruit, turned down scholarship offers from Central Michigan and Toledo in favor of walk-on opportunities from Michigan, Michigan State, Northwestern, and Western Michigan.
