David DeJulius is a senior basketball player at the University of Cincinnati. He was a junior-to-be point guard for the Michigan Wolverines with a detailed list of things he wanted in his next stop.

Despite averaging more than 25 points per game at East English Village Prep for two seasons, he struggled to find his feet as a freshman under John Beilein, averaging only 3.8 minutes in 25 games.

This season, those figures increased to nearly 21 minutes, seven points, and a critical sixth-man role, but they also came with the challenges of a coaching change and new staff.

“She got me my first rim, so she got me started,” DeJulius explained. “From there, my Father (Dave) took control.”

“Just to make her smile and feel good about starting something special is priceless,” he continued.

The Athletic spoke with DeJulius at his home in Detroit – where he had just concluded his final classes as a Michigan student – about what was most important to him during the recruiting process, why he believes he found it with Brannen and the Bearcats, and what he expects to happen next.

The young, energetic athlete is yet to be featured on the official Wikipedia page. However, after his senior year, many teams will be interested in drafting him for the NBA stage. 

He will surely make it to the NBA, as he has been a star performer for the “BearCats.”

He transferred from Michigan, where he played for the Wolverines in 2018-19 and 2019-20. As a sophomore in 2019-20, he appeared in 31 games as the team’s sixth man, averaging 7.0 points, 2.4 rebounds, and 1.5 assists in 20.9 minutes.

In the regular-season finale against No. 9 Maryland on March 9, 2020, he scored a career-high 20 points on 6-of-10 shooting with three 3-pointers. 

DeJulius was named to ESPN’s Top 100 for the Class of 2018, the fifth-best prospect in Michigan, and was rated a four-star recruit by Rivals.com and 247Sports.com after graduating from East English Village Preparatory Academy in Detroit.

The Associated Press named David a two-time Class A First Team pick and a finalist for the state’s Mr. Basketball title. He was named to the Detroit News All-Detroit First Team thrice (2017, 2018). 

As a senior at East English Village, David averaged 26.3 points, 8.1 assists, and 7.7 rebounds per game, including a 49-point performance against Chicago Orr.

David was named to the AAC’s Third Team and was a four-time Honor Roll pick. Only Bearcats allowed him to start all 33 games while leading the club in scoring, field-goal percentage, and free-throw %.

He ranks sixth in the AAC in scoring, seventh in free throws and ninth in field-goal percentage. 

DeJulius scored in double figures 23 times and had ten games with 20 or more points, while his three-point percentage improved to 9.6 percent.
