Coretta was aware of King’s extramarital relationships, but she accepted them, at least in public pronouncements.

As previously stated, the FBI transmitted an audio tape of King having sex to Coretta Scott’s home address, knowing she was handling King’s mail while her husband was overseas.

Martin and Coretta’s love story began when a mutual acquaintance, Mary Powell, played matchmaker, passing Martin Coretta Scott’s phone number.

Her opinion of him altered drastically not long into their date. “I felt he was a guy of substance, not the man I had imagined,” she wrote.

She began to regret her initial evaluation of Martin as their romance progressed.

“There was no doubt he was kind, possessed great moral values, and honestly desired to improve the lives of the least fortunate,” she wrote.

Martin and his parents finalized their plans when he returned home for Christmas in 1952: the couple would announce their engagement around Easter in the Atlanta Daily World, the city’s only Black newspaper.

Their marriage marked a significant transition in both of their lives—she was now irrevocably linked to his intentions to affect change for African Americans across the country.

Soon after, the family’s experiences with racially charged violence would hit even closer to home.

Coretta and Martin’s love story ended tragically on April 4, 1968, when he was assassinated outside his Memphis hotel room.

Coretta was born in Marion, Alabama, on April 27, 1927. Coretta Scott King was noted for her singing and violin playing and her civil rights advocacy in the early decades of her life.

She attended Lincoln High School, where she graduated as valedictorian in 1945.

Then she went to Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in music and education in 1951.

She received a fellowship to the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, Massachusetts, where she met Martin Luther King Jr., then a doctoral student at Boston University’s School of Theology.

On June 18, 1953, they married at her family’s House in Marion. She oversaw the various tasks of a pastor’s wife.

She moved to Montgomery, Alabama, with her husband after earning her voice, violin and civil rights degree from NEC in 1954, where he served as of Dexter Avenue Baptist Church.
