In 2000, Phillips made his first appearance at the 2000 Sydney Olympics as a long jump athlete. He became eighth with a jump of 8.06 meters.

Among the American athlete, Dwight was considered the best American performer in that event.

Dwight won his first world championship event in 2003 as the IAAF indoor and outdoor championship. 

Phillips beat Spain’s Yago Lamela on his indoor championship by a centimeter, a close victory. 

Similarly, on his outdoor championship, the athlete defeated James Beckford of Jamaica by four centimeters.

During his 2004 season, he was ranked as the world’s number one, winning the gold medal in Athens Olympics.

After a couple of the best career years of his life, in 2012, he had a car accident where Phillips suffered back and neck injuries.
