Ashton made his Test debut in the Ashes at the early age of 19. In Australia’s first innings, Agar made his debut and hit 98 runs off 101 balls.

Agar recorded the highest score ever for a number eleven batsman, set a record partnership of 163 runs with Philip Hughes, and became the first player to ever hit a half-century as a number eleven batsman on debut.

On September 8, 2015, he played in his first One Day International match against England.

On March 6, 2016, he played for Australia against South Africa in his first Twenty20 international match.

Having been sensationally promoted from a replacement on the 2013 tour of India to a more significant part in the Australian squad, he has a place in the teams of Western Australia, the Perth Scorchers, and the national team at the age of 19.
