Joey’s surgery, performed by Reds medical director Dr. Timothy Kremchek, was successful, but the injury ended up being more complicated than they expected, limiting the performance of the first baseman.

The Reds baseman received an MRI after the team’s latest road trip and said he wasn’t surprised by the result. However, the feedback he received from the doctor astonished him as he was advised to undergo surgery.

As per reports, the Reds used Matt Reynolds as first baseman as the initial replacement for Votto. Meanwhile, his team reinstated Mike Moustakas from the injured list in the minimum ten days required after he landed on it with a left calf strain, and he was in the lineup in Friday’s series opener vs. the Pirates at first base. 

At present, injured Reds first baseman Joey is in the early stages of rehabilitation from primary left shoulder and biceps surgery.

The final guaranteed year of the 10-year, $225 million contract he signed in 2012 is the 2023 season. With a $7 million buyout, Cincinnati Reds holds a $20 million club option for 24.
