Richard Gilliland, Jean Smart’s husband, died unexpectedly on March 18, 2021, of a heart problem at the age of 71.

She is most well-known for playing Charlene Stillfield in the 1980s television series Designing Women.

In an interview with the Chicago Tribune, she said that the doctor had diagnosed her with diabetes “even without testing what the problem was.” 

She largely disregarded her diabetes for years, rarely bothering to check her blood sugar levels. She didn’t start taking her diabetes seriously until she became pregnant with her son, Conner, out of concern for how it would affect her unborn kid. 

She managed to lower her blood sugar to a manageable level and started working as a “professional diabetic.”

She regularly checks her blood sugar levels these days and is far more “disciplined” than she ever imagined she would be. But I didn’t have a choice, she said. You will never do more for yourself than you do for others.

Actor Richard Gilliland was well-known for his roles in numerous films and television shows. After meeting Smart on the set of the popular CBS comedy Designing Women, Gilliland married him in 1987.

In 14 episodes, he played J.D. Mary Jo’s potential love interest Shackleford (played by Annie Potts). One hundred twenty episodes of the popular television show in which Smart starred as Charlene Frazier Stillfield.
