Richard Gilliland, Jean Smart’s husband, died unexpectedly on March 18, 2021, of a heart problem at the age of 71. 

Smart has been an actor since the late 1970s. She has appeared on numerous television programs, including Teachers Only, High Society, Style & Substance, Frasier, The District (with Margaret Easley), and Psych (with Timothy Omundson). 

She is most well-known for playing Charlene Stillfield in the 1980s television series Designing Women.
