Mendis struggled with the bat during the two-game test series against South Africa, recording scores of 0, 12, and 16. But each inning saw an improvement in his slip fielding.

This was Sri Lanka’s joint-highest chase and their first 300-plus chase that was successful since the 2015 World Cup.

Kusal Mendis Career Details 

Mendis led the Sri Lankan team for the 2014 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup. He received his cap in the second test of the Sobers-Tissera Trophy, becoming Sri Lanka’s 132nd Test player. 

He played his first Test in the second match of the 2015 West Indies tour of Sri Lanka. Mendis was included in the Sri Lankan team for the tour of England. In the first Test, he scored zero in the first innings but then added 53 runs in the second to reach his first test half-century.

On June 16, 2016, Mendis played in his first ODI against Ireland and made his first ODI fifty. On July 5, 2016, while on this trip, Mendis played his first Twenty20 international (T20I) match for Sri Lanka against England.

Against Australia in the first Test at the Pallekele Cricket Stadium on July 28, 2016, Mendis recorded his first century in a match. In addition to becoming the highest score against Australia at home, he became the youngest Sri Lankan to strike a century. The victory was Sri Lanka’s second over Australia in a Test, by 106 runs. As a result of his efforts, Mendis was named Man of the Match.

Mendis hit 94 runs against the West Indies in Zimbabwe’s fifth game of the Tri-series. The 330 runs Sri Lanka produced off 50 overs, which was the highest total by Sri Lanka against the West Indies, included Niroshan Dickwella’s fifty and 94 runs.

Kusal was named man of the match for his batting as Sri Lanka defeated England by one run. Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe advanced to the final thanks to this victory. Mendis got another fifty in the championship game, helping his team win the series by six wickets. His overall series performances earned him his first player of the series trophy.

Mendis defeated Australia on February 20, 2022, with a game-winning sixth T20I half-century. Mendis was chosen the player of the match after scoring an undefeated 69 runs, which enabled Sri Lanka to defeat their opponent by five wickets. He left the pitch holding his chest just before lunch on the first day of the second Test against Bangladesh on May 23, 2022 and was taken to the hospital.

Although an ECG test “came out clear,” the physicians “believe” that his suffering is due to muscle spasms.

Sri Lanka lost severely in the last Test of the Australian Test series in July 2022, and the game was over in three days. Mendis scored only 3 and 8 runs during the game. However, Mendis scored 85 runs in the second Test on July 9, 2022, along with Dimuth Karunaratne, for 152 runs.

Kusal Mendis recorded his seventh T20I half-century on September 1, 2022, against Bangladesh. In pursuit of 183 runs, he scored 60 runs. In the end, Sri Lanka prevailed, and Kusal Mendis’ heroics earned him player of the match honors.

Kusal Mendis achieved his eighth T20I half-century against India on September 6, 2022. While trying to score 173 runs, he scored 57 and formed a solid 97-run combination with Pathum Nissanka. Finally, Sri Lanka defeated its opponent by six wickets.
