Maria Clara Committed Suicide: Explore Death Cause, Real Life Details

The novel character Maria Clara committed suicide after knowing her lover had been killed. Maria is the mestiza heroine in the novel Noli Me Tángere, whose creator is José Rizal.

The novel was published during the Spanish colonial period in the Philippines in 1887. The creation explores hundred years ago perceived inequalities in law and practice in terms of the treatment by the ruling government and the Spanish Catholic friars of the resident people.

The writer has theorized the character Maria Clara based on Leonor-Rivera-Kipping, his childhood sweetheart.

The character Maria Clara commits suicide in the novel. After being separated from Juan Crisóstomo Ibarra y Magsalin and knowing his communication gap, she felt ill. 

Ibarra is the childhood sweetheart and fiancee of Maria. He is the son of Don Rafael Ibarra. Padre Salvi also blackmailed her for distancing herself from her fiancee, Ibarra.

She was also forced to give up Ibarra’s love letters, which ultimately used to implicate him.

Eventually, she felt ill and died from distraught, leading her to commit suicide. She could not hold herself back after knowing that the love of her life had been killed.

Being a serious lover and very sensitive lady, she could not hold herself from witnessing her lover’s death and chose to leave her life too.

As said earlier, Maria Clara is a fictional character in the novel Noli Me Tángere. The creator has made the fictional character based on his childhood sweetheart.

Clara is a devout Roman Catholic endowed with beauty, brain, and charm. She is celebrated as the traditional, feminine ideal in Filipino culture.

The Filipino woman had Eurasia features, and her eyes were large and black. Her had an almost golden hue with a correct profile of her nose.

Clara is kind and considerate by character. She is sensitive and notices every small detail that others have no idea about.

Her traits have been described as an “Oriental decoration” with “downcast” eyes and a “pure soul.”

Maria Clara Family Details

Maria Clara was raised as the daughter of Captain Santiago “Kaptain Tiyago” de Los Santos and his wife, Doña Pía Alba. The couple was native Filipinos.

Later, she learned that she was born as the illegitimate daughter of Padre Dámaso, a Spanish Friar who forced Doña into illicit sexual relations. 

Sadly, her mother died giving birth to her, and Dámaso was the lady’s godfather. After her mother’s death, Kapitán Tiyago’s cousin, Tía Isabel, then came to be the dominant maternal figure in her life.

Crisóstomo Ibarra and Maria went to a convent school where she cultivated feminity under religion.

The love birds got engaged but broke shortly after. Maria then engages with Linares, but she remains fiercely devoted to Ibarra.
