Matthews comes from a professional football player’s family background history. His grandfather William Clay Matthews Sr. and brother Casey Christopher Matthews were former American footballers.

His uncle, Bruce Matthews, is a former offensive lineman and cousin, Kevin Matthews is a former American football center, and Jake Matthews is an American football offensive tackle.

Matthews’ love for football had surfaced from the beginning of his childhood. His father and his mother, Leslie Matthews, encouraged their son to participate in all such activities of playing.

Matthews attended Agoura Hills High School in California, where he played for the Pre-K team of Agoura Chargers. He was physically a late bloomer and average in studies.

Although he had much love for playing football, his father, Clay Matthews Jr., the team’s defensive coordinator, declined to instigate his son because of his undersized physique.

College Career

Physical transformation in Matthews began developing in his senior season. He attended the University of Southern California in the United States.

He got the chance to play in the University of Southern California’s (USCs) Bowl Championship Series (BCS) National Championship for the Trojan football team from 2004 to 2008.

Matthews spectacularly performed special team play and was awarded USCs Co-special Team Player of the Year in 2006, 2007, and 2008, making him the only person in history to be awarded consecutively for three years.

The University of Southern California (USCs) enlisted Matthews among 12 senior football players, and the Sports Illustrated 2009 National Football League Draft Preview magazine featured him in the same year.

NFL Career

Matthews always hoped to play in the National Football League (NFL) Championship representing a famous club.

In the 2009 National Football League Draft process, the Green Bay Packers, a professional American football team based in Green Bay, Wisconsin, acquired Matthews with the 26th overall selection.

After selecting Matthews, Kevin Greene, former All-Pro linebacker, opined that “Matthews has a set of skills that I have not seen in an outside linebacker. He is better than Kevin Greene was.”

From here, Matthews started his professional career and proved to be a skillful linebacker.

After a stunning performance in the 13th week of that season with six tackles and two sacks, he was awarded the NFC Defensive Player of the Week.

He became the first Packers’ rookie selected to be in a Pro-Bowl after being added to the 2010 Pro-Bowl NFC Squad.

 Matthews was awarded three titles – SN-NFL Defensive Player of the Year, NFC Defensive Player of the Year, and Butkus Award.

In the 2010 National Football League, he uses different tactics to finish with a season record of 60 tackles, 13.5 sacks, and four pass deflections.

The ESPN ranked Matthews second-best pass rusher and the fourth-best linebacker before the 2011 season and the second-best outside linebacker by Sporting News before the 2012 season.

He became the highest-paid linebacker in National Football League history after Matthews signed a contract worth $66 million with the Green Bay Packers for five seasons starting from 2014

Matthews was ranked 57th and 82nd on the NFL Top 100 Player of 2016 and NFL Top Player of 2017, respectively, and in September of 2017, he became the Packer’s all-time sacks leader.

After reaching a deadline with the Packers, he was released as an unrestricted free agent and signed two years of deal with the Los Angeles Rams football team on March 19, 2019.

Clay Matthews: Controversies and Injuries

Among many athletes, Matthews was alleged as an illegal performance-enhancing drug user in The Dark Side: Secrets of the Sports Dopes, an Al Jazeera 2016 documentary.

After an investigation, the NFL cleared Matthews in August 2016, quoting “no credible evidence.”

During the 2018 season, he was called two times for a controversial roughing the pass penalty against Minnesota Vikings and Washington Redskins.

Matthews has suffered from many injuries during his NFL career. He injured his thumb two times in the consecutive season, 2013 and 2014.

On June 2, 2018, in the off-season Green and Gold Charity Softball Game, the ball directly hit and broke his nose. Later in the 2019 National Football League, Matthews suffered from a broken jaw followed by surgery.
