Dikembe Mutombo, 56, is currently undergoing surgery for a brain tumor. The league and his family have assured fans that he is receiving the best care possible from a collaborative team of specialists in Atlanta. They added that he is in great spirits as the treatment begins.
Basketball fans virtually rallied around the retired NBA star. The family also asked for privacy so they could focus on his care. Nevertheless, they have expressed gratefulness for the thoughts, prayers, and good wishes.
The family did not release any other details, including the discovery of the tumor.
Dikembe, a well-known humanitarian, is the founder of the Dikembe Mutombo Foundation, established in 1997. The organization concentrates on improving health, education, and quality of life for the people in his homeland of Congo.
The foundation led the construction of a 170-bed hospital in Kinshasa, Congo’s capital city and the facility has treated nearly a half-million people regardless of their ability to pay. Born on June 25, 1966, Dikembe is 56.

Dikembe is married to his wife, Rose Mutombo. The partners of 26 years have a son named Ryan Mutombo.
The junior Mutombo followed in his Father’s footsteps and played basketball for Georgetown Hoyas men’s basketball as the #21 center.
The NBA star attended Boboto College in Kinshasa to lay the groundwork for his medical career. During high school, Dikembe played football and participated in martial arts.
When he was around age 16, his Father and brother encouraged him to pursue a career in basketball due to his tall stature.
He moved to the United States in 1987 at 21 and enrolled in Georgetown University. The Nuggets selected him 4th in Round 1 of the 1991 NBA draft.
