On September 3, 2022, with the time ticking down on a Philadelphia Union victory against the New York Red Bulls, a clearly irritated Yearwood kicked the ball away during a break in play.

The ball appeared to deflect off one fan, a toddler, before striking another, a young woman, in the face. Yearwood raced into the stands to apologize but was turned away by a person sitting next to the female fan.

As he returned to the pitch, the crowd surrounding him chanted “a**hole.”

Yearwood was given a red card, the young woman had blood streaming from her mouth, and the infant was sobbing as a result of the event.
