Prescott injured his right (throwing) thumb in the season opener against the Buccaneers when it collided with the hand of Tampa Bay pass rusher Shaq Barrett.
Prescott immediately realized the injury was serious when he couldn’t grip the football on the next play. Following the game, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones confirmed Prescott’s suspicion of a brutal injury, saying he would require surgery.
Prescott avoided being placed on Injured Reserve (IR), which would have kept him out for at least four weeks. Prescott hopes to return to the field in Week 4 against the Commanders.
Prescott told ESPN’s Lisa Salters that he isn’t ruling out a Week 4 return. Before Dallas’ Week 4 Monday night game against the Giants, he had the stitches removed from the surgically repaired hand.
Following the removal of his stitches, Prescott will be able to grip and throw a football. Rapoport states it is a “clean fracture” of the throwing thumb above the joint.
According to Rapoport, Prescott avoided the worst-case scenario; the surgery would have been more complicated if the fracture had not been clean.
