Ken Miles was born to his parents, Eric Miles and Clarice Jarvis.
In the Birmingham suburb of Sutton Coldfield, he was born on November 1, 1918. Miles dropped out of school at the age of 15 to work as an apprentice at Wolseley Motors after making a failed attempt to emigrate to the United States.
Wolseley Motors sent Miles to a technical school to further his understanding of vehicle construction. Before enlisting in the British Army during World War II, he competed in motorcycle races. Ken Miles was married to Mollie, and they gave birth to Peter Miles on September 28, 1950.
At Riverside International in California, where his Father tested a Ford J-car, a crash ejected him, killing him instantly. Peter Miles was there, along with his mother, Mollie. He had just turned 15 at the time. Peter Miles started working at the Troutman and Barnes custom car shop in Culver City, California, run by his Father’s friend Dick Troutman after his untimely passing.
He stayed there for an additional 14 years. He eventually relocated to Precision Performance Inc. in 1986. He also served as Ivan Stewart’s crew chief at the 1991 Nissan 400, which Stewart won. Stewart is a legend in off-road racing.
Although Peter Miles led a private life, he shared his Father’s love of automobiles, albeit not in the same way as a racer. He has experience as a mechanic and even served as Ivan Stewart’s crew chief.
