Eberflus coached defensive backs for Toledo’s final two academic years. Toledo had a winning record each of the seven seasons that Eberflus was their full-time head coach, compiling a 56-22-2 overall, including an 11-0-1 record in 1995 and a 10-1 record in 2000.

Matt Eberflus Career Details Explored

Eberflus joined Gary Pinkel as his defensive coordinator at the University of Missouri (at Columbia) in 2001, where he also served as the position’s defensive backs coach. Eberflus received the rank of Associate Head Coach in 2006. 

Eberflus assisted the Tigers in 2003 as they advanced to the Independence Bowl, which was Mizzou’s first bowl game in five seasons. The Tigers’ pass defense finished third in the nation the following season, and the squad finished second in the Big 12 in terms of total defense. 

Continuing his winning ways, Eberflus led the Tigers’ defense to the Big 12 North Division championship in 2007 and 2008 while compiling a 22-6 record throughout that time.

Brad Smith, a four-year starter at quarterback at Columbia, William Moore, and Sean Weatherspoon were all recruited by Eberflus, who also excelled as a defensive tactician. 

Smith would go on to be selected by the New York Jets and enjoy an eight-year career as an NFL wide receiver after being just the second player in Division I-A football history to ever pass for 2,000 yards and carry for 1,000 yards in a single season, among countless other collegiate honors.
