Yoel Romero Religion: His Love For Jesus

Yoel Romero, who also goes by the nickname “Soldier of God,” is a devout Christian.

On 27 June 2015, the athlete defecated Lyoto Machida, a former light heavyweight champion, at UFC Fight Night 70 event in Hollywood, Florida. However, his post-fight interview got more attention than his career-defining victory.

UFC announcer Jon Anik approached the MMA fighter for a post-fight victory interview. While everyone was waiting to hear the heartfelt speech about hard work and never giving up, Romero gave a bizarre religious speech.

He said, “Why come USA. Go back for you. Go for Jesus, not for gay Jesus people”. English is not Yeol’s first language, so his sentences were misconstrued.

It was not clear if he said “not to forget Jesus” or “not for gay Jesus.” However, people thought the athlete was referencing the Supreme Court ruling in the USA, which legalized gay marriage in June 2015.

Dana White’s Warning

Following the controversy about the speech, Dana White warned Yeol. The president of the UFC said America didn’t want to hear about the Cuban athlete’s thoughts on Jesus and said to keep that stuff at home.

Romero apologized in the post-fight press conference through a Spanish interpreter. He claimed he talked about living the American Dream and his gratefulness to God.

But the UFC president argued that Yeol should have just talked about only fighting, not religion, politics, and his love for Jesus.
