Yulieski Gourriel Castillo, also known as Yuli Gurriel or “La Pia,” is a first baseman with the Houston Astros of Major League Baseball who is Cuban (MLB). Yula had previously played for Sancti Spiritus in the Nippon Professional Baseball’s Yokohama DeNA BayStars, and he is also a superstar in the Cuban National Series (CNS) (NPB). 

He was a gold medal winner at the 2004 Olympic Games and was a previous member of Cuba’s national squad. Yulieski has always been a capable infielder. He has been making major league appearances at shortstop, second base, and third base.

In 2006, Yulieski was thought to be the top player in Cuba. MLB scouts predicted Gurriel would be a first-round choice if he declared for the draft at the 2006 World Baseball Classic. The athlete left Cuba in 2016, the same year he made his big league debut.

Yuli Gurriel was injured after colliding with Philadelphia Phillie’s first baseman Rhys Hoskins during the bottom of the seventh inning of game five of the World Series on Thursday at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia.

Yuli Gurriel of the Astros left Game 5 of the World Series against the Phillies on Thursday night after getting a knee to the head. It was the top of the seventh inning.

Trey Mancini was added to the lineup in the eighth inning to pinch-hit for Gurriel. After Gurriel doubled in the seventh and moved to third, the incident happened. He was caught between third base and home plate to bring in another run for the Astros on a ground ball.

Gurriel doubled to start the inning, moving on to third on David Hensley’s ground out. McCormick then grounded out to the third base.

Gurriel was caught between home and third as the third baseman for the Phillies, Alec Bohm, threw the ball to the home plate. 

Despite being run down, Gurriel held on long enough for McCormick to get to second base. It appeared like Hoskins had been shot in the head after being tagged by Gurriel and falling over him. Gurriel’s director looked to be struck by Hoskins’ knee.

Gurriel took his time standing up and was seen in the dugout cradling his head. But before being pinch-hit for by Trey Mancini in the top of the eighth, Gurriel had a chance to stay and play first base in the bottom half of the inning. 

Gurriel has led the Astros in playoff hitting average (.347), so it would be a big blow if they could not field him in game six.

He led the series in triples, runs, and RBIs in 2005–2006, though, when he started to dominate.

The Cuban athlete had a.327 batting average and a.676 slugging percentage. In the Cuban National Series, Gurriel played for Sancti Spiritus and Industriales.

Nearly ten years before, ESPN.com falsely claimed that Eduardo Paret, another member of the Cuban national team, and Gurriel had defected from Cuba and entered Colombia.

 On August 1, 2006, Gurriel disputed this assertion, claiming that he had returned to his home in Cuba as soon as the competition in which the Cuban national team was participating was over.
