His mother was a dance teacher named Sherri Renee, also known as ‘nee Patton.’ 

On the other hand, his father was a free man with many talents, which shows that the apple does not fall very far from the tree. 

His father, William Thomas Hader Sr., was a restaurant manager, truck driver, air cargo company owner, and standup comedian.

He was hyperactive during his childhood. Moreover, he recognizes himself as a ‘spaz kid’ during his days in ‘elementary school.’

Because of being an awkward kid, he felt like he did not fit in. As a result, he spent his time watching movies and reading in place of playing with other kids.

Education

Bill initially went to Patrick Henry Elementary School for his early education. However, he had a hard time fitting into the school.

Later, during his junior high, he moved to Edison Junior High. He was an average student and had very low tier grades.

Due to his low grades, he went to Cascia Hall Preparatory School for a chance to join a good high school.

Bill was interested in film from a young age and even made short films with his friends.

However, he failed to gain admission to a top film school due to his grades.

As a result, he enrolled in The Art Institute of Phoenix. It is one of the non-profit schools owned by the Education Principle Foundation.

After completing high school, he later joined Scottsdale Community College. It is a public community college in Scottsdale, Arizona.

However, he did not complete his graduation.

Early Employments

Bill was not a superstar from the start. Initially, he worked as a salesman for Christmas tree.  

In college, he met Nicholas Jasenovec, the director of the movie, ‘Paper Heart’ of 2009. This meeting developed his aspirations to become a filmmaker.

Consequently, he dropped out of college and moved to Los Angeles. His parents let him use the money saved for his education for living expenses as support.

Bill found a job as a production assistant in Los Angeles. He had hoped to become an assistant director but eventually quit the job.

Subsequently, he secured a job as night-time assistant editor at the post-production facility Triage Entertainment. 

He was also invested in making his short film and joining comedy classes with friends during this period. 

Later, Hader realized that comedy was his kind of creative engagement and even formed a comedy group with his friends.

He and his friends performed sketch comedy as a group named ‘Animals from the future.’ 

Additionally, Hader worked as an assistant editor on Iron Chef America.

Career

While performing skits with his comedy group, he was recognized by Megan Mullally. Megan recommended Hader to Lorne Michaels, founder of SNL. 

He was then called up for an audition for SNL, for which he flew to New York. 

However, he did not have any impressions prepared for the audition. So, he spontaneously imitated a random Italian man he had once overheard.

SNL and Breakthrough

After the audition, Hader was hired as a featured player and did his first show on SNL in October 2005.

His debut role was as a psychologist. In one of the interviews, Bill expressed that going to SNL was like ‘moving from preschool to Harvard.’

He became an impressionist for SNL. Initially, he had only imitated his friends and family. Finally, after joining SNL, he did impersonations of celebrities.

His list of impressions includes more than 60 or 70 well-known celebrities.

This list includes names like Al Pacino, Clint Eastwood, Stephen King, Adam Levine, Tommy Lee Jones, William Defoe, Robert Pattinson, etc.

In addition to impersonations, he also had characters of his own. Some of his characters were Brady Trunk, Bryce, Devin, Leonard, Stefon, etc.

Despite huge numbers of characters and impersonations, Bill never felt comfortable throughout his first four seasons.

Bill even had panic attacks and sleepless nights because he felt he had less experience than his peers.

SNL was his breakthrough into the TV and Movies industry. Only a year after being in SNL, he got to work in a movie named ‘You, Me and Dupree.’

Movies and Other Works

Hader worked on SNL till 2013, not only as an actor-comedian, but he also wrote some skits and even produced some. 

After working on his first movie, he got offers left and right to work on different movies and TV shows.

Only in 2007 did he work on movies like Knocked Up, Purple Violets, Hot Rod, Superbad, and The Brothers Solomon.

He had comedic or filler character roles in most of these movies.

He continued his success in 2008 by expanding his roots to movies and TV series.

From 2008 to 2010, he worked on 6 movies and 6 TV shows. Additionally, he also worked as a voice actor.

His voice is cast on movies like Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, Ice Age, etc.

Moreover, he also worked on the famous GTA IV video game as the voice actor for a character named Wilson Taylor Sr.

During all this time, he was still working on SNL. He left SNL in 2013. 

Before 2013, he got to work on more amazing movies. He became one of the well-recognized voice actors for animated movies.

Such animated movies include Monsters University, Turbo, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2, Hoodwinked Too! Hood vs. Evil etc.

Before leaving SNL, he also got on one of the biggest animated series of America, ‘South Park‘, in 2011.

After SNL
