Washington, a voice instructor, passed away earlier this month at 71, as was revealed by posting a video of the duo dancing to Only You by the Platters on Twitter.

The Oscar contender discussed the pain of losing his wife and their nearly four decades of marriage in a piece for the Daily Mail, referring to it as “the ride of my lifetime.”

From Washington’s previous relationship, the couple has a daughter named Olivia and a stepson named Tom. They were married in 1986.

After 38 years, he told the camera, “Navigating alone feels like a whole new planet.” Grant said, “Joan so sensibly urged me to locate a pocketful of delight in each day,” before giggling and adding, “Try my best.”

In his essay, he said: “As lovely as this beach is, I feel and look like an old turtle without its shell, attempting to find my way in the world on my own, having lost my dear ‘compass’ called Joan.”

Emoticons were used in comments made in support by well-known people, including Octavia Spencer and Tracey Emin, and other supporters encouraged followers to “put one foot in front of the other.”
