Early Career

His competitive career started in the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) Championships in 1995.

Subsequently, he also went for Olympic trials in 1996, earning 3rd place. However, he was ranked 4th in all of the US with a record of 79.98m.

As a result, this javelin thrower failed to qualify for the Olympics on the first try. 

The following year was much better for him as he was the runner-up at the NCAA Championships.

This athlete was the second runner-up at the USA Championships. Moreover, he also competed at the World University Games in the 1998-1999 season.

Unfortunately, Greer suffered from a wrist injury during the season. However, in his return to the World University Games in 1999, he recorded 241-4.

He fulfilled the Olympic trials and participated in the 2000 Sydney Olympics. 

Peak Career

His participation in the Olympic games was followed by being the number one in the US for eight straight years from 2000 to 2007. 

In addition, he was ranked at number 7 in the whole world during this period.

During these years, Breaux achieved multiple records. He won silver at the 2001 Goodwill Games and gold at the 2001 USA Outdoor Championships.

Similarly, he won the bronze medal at Pan American Games in 2003. Subsequently, he won the gold in the 2004 World Athletics Final.

This athlete competed in Mt. SAC Relays, Diamond League, USA Outdoor Championships, World Championships, and the Olympic Games.

He established a national record with 91.29m at the 2007 USA Outdoor Championships.

Olympics

Breaux and John Pennel are the only two northeast Louisiana stars to compete in Olympics as track and field athletes.

John Pennel had set a world record in pole vaulting in the late 60s with 5.44m which is not very high compared to today’s standard. 

In Greer’s first Olympic games, the 2000 Sydney Olympics, he set a record of 262-2 or 79.92 m. As a result, he secured 12th place in the tournament. 

His second Olympic games had a promising start with a record mark of 87.25 m/286-3 on the first throw.

Later, he broke the American record with an 87.39 m throw but tore a ligament in his knee during the throw.

However, he didn’t go through immediate surgery because he wanted to compete in the Olympics. 

He recorded only 74.36 in the first throw in the Olympics as his leg was injured and ended the tournament with 12th place.

In 2008, Greer only reached 17th place during qualification for the next Olympic games due to injury. As a result, he failed to qualify.

However, Track and Field chair later added him to the USA roster for the 2008 Beijing Olympics based on the USATF rules.

As per the rule, an injured athlete that has reached Olympic ‘A’ standard can be selected if no other athlete is displaced from the team.

Sadly, he had to be removed from the roster because he did not fully recover even nine months past the surgery.

Retirement

Following the unqualified Olympic Games in 2008, he retired from professional javelin throw.

The following year, he appeared in the second season of the American series called American Gladiators

In addition, he played the role of ‘Hurricane’ in the series and appeared in the show for four episodes.
