In practice two of the Monaco Grand Prix, Daniel Ricciardo lost control of his McLaren and crashed into the barriers.
He promised to “bounce back” following his crash in practice two at the Monaco Grand Prix, which Sky Sports F1’s Nico Rosberg termed another “huge setback” for the McLaren driver.
Before colliding into the Armco barrier, the McLaren driver lost control of his vehicle at the challenging turn 13/14 swimming pool chicane.
The Australian had unexpected understeer in turn 13, forcing him to go slightly off track. Ricciardo attempted to catch the slip but overcorrected and crashed into the wall at a speed of about 130 mph.
The incident sent three pieces of debris and the front left tire across the racing line. At turn 15, Daniel Ricciardo’s vehicle rested against the tec-pro barrier.
The collision raised the red flag, but Ricciardo was unharmed and returned to the garage.
Moments after the crash, his race engineer convinced Ricciardo that the team would be able to repair the damage in time for tomorrow’s qualifying.
Marshals were on track to clean up the worst damage before the session restarted. Nicholas Latifi, a Williams driver, lamented that some debris was still on the racing line shortly after the practice.
A similar event at the same corner occurred just hours before the collision with F2 driver Jake Hughes. After hitting the inside of turn 13 and losing his front wing, the British driver lost control going through the chicane.
The automobile then slammed into the wall as he could not stop it. After the collision, sportscar driver Alex Brundle defended Hughes, blaming the event on a curb inside turn 14.
“I was just here a couple of weeks ago for the historic & one of my buddies driving a historic 1980s F1 vehicle said, ‘gosh me, that kerb on the left-hand side of the swimming pool, that elevated orange section chucks the car towards the outside & the second kerb,” he explained.
“He’s had a nasty bump mid-corner there, taking off towards the wall.”
Ricciardo has struggled against team-mate Lando Norris this season and lies 11th in the drivers’ standings. The former Red Bull star has scored just 11 points this season compared to Norris’ 39.
