Poe’s uncle Henry Herring provided a straightforward mahogany casket, and the hearse was furnished by his cousin Neilson Poe.
His wife fashioned Moran’s shroud. Virginia Poe’s cousin, the Reverend W. T. D. Clemm, officiated at the funeral.

In the chilly, soggy conditions, the ceremony lasted only three minutes. Poe was buried in a low-quality coffin without handles, a nameplate, a cloth liner, or a pillow for his head at Westminster Presbyterian Churchyard in Baltimore.

In Baltimore, Poe was given a second funeral on October 10, 2009. Actors played Poe’s contemporaries and other long-dead authors and artists.

Rufus Wilmot Griswold used the alias “Ludwig” to write Poe’s obituary after his passing. Poe’s competitor Griswold, who took on the literary executor for Poe’s estate, later released his first comprehensive biography, painting Poe as a perverted, drunk, drug-addled lunatic.
Griswold is thought to have fabricated most of the data supporting this interpretation of Poe, and despite the protests of his friends, this interpretation had a long-lasting effect.
