Abbott suffered a rare accident at age 26 that left him essentially crippled and bedridden for a month. His aspirations to become a lawyer faded.

Greg Abbott, the governor of Texas, has already gotten $7.9 million from a legal settlement related to an injury that rendered him wheelchair-bound in 1984.

After using the homeowner and the tree service, Abbott received a settlement that included graded payments for tax-free annuities.

He received his first payment, a $300,000 check written in 1986.
