Mikkola began his professional career journey in 1963 when he drove Volvo PV544. During his early years in the rally, he had many hard times.

After several years of disappointment in the World Championship, in 1983, Mikkola had his best career season with impressive four wins and three-second places.

With his first World Championship title in 1983, Mikkola became the oldest rally world champion.

Although he retired from rally races, Mikkola was making a brief appearance, such as during the 1970 London to Mexico World Cup Rally’s 25th anniversary, which he and his co-driver Gunner Palm won.
