In 1952, Jorge Labarga was born in Cuba. They had two daughters together, and he was married to Zulma R. Labarga. At 11, he immigrated to the country and settled in Pahokee, Florida, where he resided with his family. 

He obtained his B.A. and J.D. from the University of Florida in 1976 and 1979, respectively, after graduating from Forest Hill High School in West Palm Beach in 1972.

Assigned to the appellate, misdemeanor, and felony trial divisions, Justice Labarga started his legal career in 1979 as an Assistant Public Defender in the Public Defender’s Office in West Palm Beach. 

He started working for the West Palm Beach State Attorney’s Office in 1982, where he tried cases ranging from theft to murder. He joined the personal injury trial practice of Cone, Wagner, Nugent, Roth, Romano & Ericksen, P.A. in 1987 and specialized in this area of law. Justice Labarga took part in the establishment of Roth, Duncan & Labarga, P.A. in West Palm Beach in 1992. 

There, he continued to focus on criminal defense and personal injury litigation.

Before this, from 1996 until 2009, he served as a judge for Florida’s 15th Circuit Court in Palm Beach County. In the 2000 U.S. Presidential election, he made headlines as the impartial judge who rejected a new county-only vote because the Constitution required elections to be held nationwide on the same day, not only in one region.

Gov. Charlie Crist had appointed Labarga to the Fourth District Court of Appeal for Florida, an intermediate appellate court with its headquarters in West Palm Beach, Florida, before he was named to the Florida Supreme Court. 

He only held that job for a single day on January 5, 2009. To replace departing Justice Harry Lee Anstead on the Florida Supreme Court, Governor Crist swiftly moved Labarga to that bench, shortening his tenure there. 

In place of outgoing Chief Justice Ricky Polston, Labarga was sworn in as the Supreme Court of Florida’s 56th Chief Justice on June 30, 2014. The judicial branch of Florida has never had a Leader of Hispanic heritage before Labarga.

Governor Lawton Chiles nominated Justice Labarga to the Palm Beach County Circuit Court of the Fifteenth Judicial Circuit in 1996. In that capacity, he handled cases for the family, civil, and criminal courts. In the civil division, he also served as the administrative judge.
