Chael Patrick Sonnen, famed by his cage name Chael Sonnen is a renowned retired mixed martial artist, submission grappling promoter, and mixed martial arts (MMA) analyst from America.

The former MMA fighter began competing for the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), where he became a top contender in both the light heavyweight and middleweight divisions and challenged for UFC Middleweight Championships and Light Heavyweight.

 Chael is famed as one of the best mixed martial artists. However, he never won a significant MMA world championship. He fought in World Extreme Cagefighting, Pancrase, and Bellator MMA.

The former MMA fighter began working as an MMA analyst for ESPN in 2104. After two years, Chael founded Submission Underground (SUG), his submission wrestling promotion.

According to USA Today, former UFC title challenger Chael faces nearly a dozen charges from a December incident in Las Vegas.

The criminal complaint filed against Sonnen and obtained by ESPN says six people were attacked, including a man he is accused of strangling. The complaint states that Sonnen allegedly used “force of violence upon” a woman “by punching/striking” and pushing her.

According to the complaint, Sonnen allegedly punched the first man, punched and kicked a second man, punched a third man in the face, punched and kneeing the fourth man, and struck the fifth man with his elbow.

Court documents filed in the case alleged he “choked a man, punched and struck a woman and punched and kneed others in the head and face” as part of an assault on six people, per TMZ.

Clark County District Attorney’s office reported one felony charge the MMA analyst faced, battery by strangulation, was dropped along with five counts of misdemeanor battery. He still faces five other misdemeanor charges.

The Oregon native was suspended for two years by the Nevada State Athletic Commission for testing positive for several performance-enhancing drugs, including human growth hormone (HGH) and erythropoietin (EPO). It was his third positive drug test in MMA.

 Chael Sonnen never was arrested or placed in jail, but he was issued citations and escorted off the property.

A video published by TMZ Sports shows a man who appears to be a former MMA fighter being escorted down a hallway with his hands behind his back and a T-shirt around his shoulders.

Nevada prosecutors dropped six of the 11 charges filed against former UFC fighter Chael Sonnen following a December altercation at a Las Vegas hotel.

Sonnen initially received five battery citations in the case, but the court dismissed those in January without prejudice, which means he can refile the charges. According to court records, a new criminal complaint was filed by the Clark County district attorney with the Las Vegas Justice Court on March 16.

 He was one of his era’s most popular and well-paid fighters, a perennial 185-pound contender and charismatic antagonist to the UFC’s biggest stars. Sonnen is a former wrestling All-American at the University of Oregon.

Sonnen never returned to the UFC after the suspension, signing with Bellator. He retired from an MMA competition in 2019 and has worked as an analyst for multiple promotions and media outlets.

What Charges Did Chael Sonnen Face?

According to online court records, Sonnen was hit with ten misdemeanor charges of battery and one felony charge of battery by strangulation. He is due for his initial court appearance on April 27 in Las Vegas.

The alleged incident occurred on December 18 at the Luxor Hotel and Casino. Initially facing five misdemeanor battery counts for alleged altercations with five separate.

According to USAToday, the MMA analyst had the charges dismissed by the court without prejudice. The costs can be refiled at a later date.

However, after the Las Vegas incident, Chael has not competed since 2019 but has served in an analyst role for various stations and promotions, including the UFC and Bellator, and heading grappling promotion Submission Underground. Meanwhile, the MMA fighter has not yet commented on the charges filed against him.
