In the National Football League (NFL), Franco Harris spent 13 seasons playing professionally with the Pittsburgh Steelers, mainly as a running back.

Harris was born in Fort Dix, New Jersey. In World War II, his Father, a black soldier named Cad Harris, was stationed in Italy.

When the war was finished, his mother, Gina Parenti Harris, an Italian native who later became a “war bride,” moved to the U.S. with her husband.

Harris and Dana Dokmanovich got married. Their only child was Franco “Dok” Harris, a third-party candidate who finished second with 25% of the vote in the 2009 Pittsburgh mayoral race.

Franco’s brother, Pete Harris, was a Penn State football player who died on August 15, 2006, at 49, following a heart attack.

In addition to being a member of the Center for Food Innovation’s advisory board, Penn State’s School of Hospitality Management appointed Harris a Conti Professor in the fall of 2009.

He took part in and made a financial contribution to Penn Staters for Responsible Stewardship, an organization trying to get the trustees at Penn State removed.
