Why Did Jalen Hill Retire From Basketball? His Mental Health Issues
Hill announced his retirement from basketball after the season ended, claiming mental health problems that he said started soon after an incident on the team’s preseason trip to China.
From 2017 to 2021, Hill played for the Bruins for four seasons after redshirting his rookie year. His greatest season was 2019–20, when he started 25 games for UCLA, scored 9.0 points, and grabbed 6.9 rebounds on average per game. Throughout 77 games, he averaged 6.5 points and 6.4 rebounds for the Bruins.
Hill took a break from the game in the middle of his final season with UCLA in 2021. After struggling with anxiety and depression, he would eventually give up basketball, physically and emotionally, starting a healthier lifestyle without the sport.
Jalen had said that he simply needed to put himself out of the team’s way because of his mental state. He also said he didn’t want to prevent them from attaining their objectives.
