In a 2009 interview, Goodman discussed his struggle with drinking.

He said, “My memory may have been harmed by the previous Jackie Daniel franchise, which is already weakening due to my declining health. Having worked for 30 years, I stopped being interested in anything. I was simply fed up with myself. I even lost interest in wanting to be an actor.”

He said in October 2012 that he would “get the shivers so bad I’d have to have a drink to get through the show” when performing in plays.

He added that he would “usually envision a drink—generally right out of the bottle—in my head, I couldn’t do it. I was fortunate never to lose my job. Goodman attempts to attend an AA meeting every morning. He has been sober since 2007.
