Jose Altuve was welcomed into the world on 6th May of 1990 in Maracay, Venezuela.

His father’s name is Carlos Altuve Sr. and his mother’s name Lastenia Linares.

His father, Carlos, was an engineer and now has retired. At the same time, his mother, Lastenia Linares, is a housewife.

Jose Altuve has a small family, which includes his parents and his younger brother.

Jose Altuve has only one sibling. His brother’s name is Carlos Altuve Jr. He is a sports coach who resides in Venezuela and taught baseball at the Mariners Academy.

Minor Leagues

When Jose was 16 years old, he was playing for the Venezuelan under 16 national teams.

That was the year he decided to join the Houston Astros tryout camp, which was being held in Maracay. But the scout denied him to play because of his height; they suspected he was lying about his age.

The next day he reached the camp with his birth certificate. Seeing his excellent hand-eye coordination, he immediately got drafted in the Houston Astros. The team officials were very impressed.

The Houston Astros signed Jose as an undrafted free agent. On March 6th of 2007, Jose signed a fifteen thousand dollar contract with the Houston Astros.

He played in the Venezuelan Summer games, hitting a .343. After that year, Jose moved to America to play for the Greenville Astros.

In just 45 games, he had.324 and 21 stolen bases. This earned him the MVP award and a spot on the All-Star team.

He then played for the Tri-City ValleyCats for the next 21 games.

In 2010, he played for the Lexington Legends of Class A of the South Atlantic League.

He moved in the Lancaster Jets of Class A California League, hitting a .276 in his games.

The next season he returned with the Lancaster Jets but seeing the excellent play, he was promoted to the Corpus Christi Hooks of Class AA Texas League.

He hit a .361 that year. He was named the Second Baseman in Baseball America 2011 minor league.

Major League Years

On July 19th of 2011, Jose was promoted to the major team of Houston Astros. He played his first game in the All-stars futures game.

On August 20th, he hit the first home run of his career.

He became the second Astros player after Adam Everett hit an inside-the-park home run.

He was also the second player to lead the game inside a field home run since Bill Dorian in 1987.

Jose batted .346 in his first game, and by the end of 21 games in his first season in the major league, he had a .276 home run.

He also had two home runs and seven stolen bases.

On May 1st of 2012, Jose Altuve faced the tallest player in Major League Baseball, Jon Rauch from the New York Mets.

The striking 18 inches difference is said to be the highest between a pitcher and a batter and made several headlines.

Altuve was the Astros representative in the All-Star Game in Kauffman Stadium in the Kansas City of Missouri. This was his career’s first selection.

The next year Jose Altuve signed a $12.5 million deal with the Astros for the period of four more years.

He was to receive seven hundred and fifty thousand dollars as a bonus at the end of 2013. The same year he was hitting.280 and had 21 stolen bases, 16 doubles, and 15 RBIs.

On the Rise

On June 29th of 2014, he stole two bases against the Detroit Tigers. No player other than Ray Chapman had two consecutive stolen bases in one game.

Altuve also became the first player since 1993 to have 130 hits and 40 stolen bases before the All-star break.

Similarly, he was named the All-star game. Jose is the only player in history to represent both the national and American Leagues in the All-star games while being on the same team.

In a single season, he also broke the record previously held by Craig Biggio by hitting 225 hits in a single season. He did this when 11 games were remaining for the Astros.

By the end of the season, he has 47 doubles, seven home runs, and 59 RBIs. He became the first-ever Astros to win the Batting Title.

Jose won the Silver Slugger Award in 2014 by being the top hitter in the American League as the second baseman. He was also given the Luis Aparicio Award given by the Venezuelan government.

Player of the Month

On September 25th of 2015, Jose hit his 800th hit, surpassing Craig Biggio to become the fastest player to reach 800th in the Astros.

Similarly, he also became the first-ever player in Astros and the Venezuelan baseball league to have more than 200 hits for more than one season.

Altuve led the American baseball team in the fielding area with .993.  Rawlings Gold Glove Award for second base on November 10th of 2015 was awarded to Jose. Jose received his consecutive second Silver Slugger Award.

Likewise, he became the Player of the Month in June of 2016. Jose had an American League-leading .336 batting average. This earned him his second Batting title since 2014.

Despite having an injured right knee in the 2018 season, Jose Altuve played remarkably and earned his fifth Silver Slugger Award.  He did patella avulsion surgery in his right knee at the end of the season.

Altuve was again placed on the injured list in the 2019 season missing 35 games. He returned to the field against the Cincinnati reds with his career’s 142nd hit.

On July 27th of 2020, he hit his career’s 300th hit. Altuve is the Venezuelan Player with the most RBIs in the playoffs.
