Actor Kevin Spacey is American. He started as a stage performer in the 1980s, landing supporting roles before moving on to prominent positions in movies and television.

In a statement posted to Twitter regarding Rapp’s accusations, Spacey said he offered Rapp “the deepest apology for what would have been extremely inappropriate intoxicated behavior.”
After that, Spacey continued, “This story has inspired me to face other aspects of my life. I know there are rumors about me, some of which have been made worse by how I guarded my private. I’ve decided to live my life as a gay man.

I want to approach this honestly and openly, and I must start by looking at myself. Spacey’s first official public declaration of his sexuality, typically caused for celebration, was made in the statement.
But many people saw his comments and his decision to come forward in reaction to Rapp’s accusations as a diversion from the gravity of the allegation that he had preyed on an underage victim.

The backlash was immediate, and Spacey’s action was roundly condemned. Some commentators criticized it for contributing to the false narrative that equates pedophilia with LGBT male identity.

Actor Anthony Rapp claimed on October 29, 2017, that Spacey approached him at a Party in 1986 when he was 14 and Spacey was 26 and appeared intoxicated.
When Rapp first related this story in a 2001 interview with The Advocate, Spacey’s name was withheld from publication to avoid legal concerns and public exposure.
Spacey claimed through Twitter that he did not recall the interaction but that, if he had acted as claimed, he offered Rapp “the deepest apology for what would have been extremely inappropriate intoxicated behavior.”
Rapp filed a Child Victims Act lawsuit against Spacey on September 9, 2020, alleging sexual battery, sexual assault, and intentional infliction of mental distress.
Then, fifteen more individuals, including Boston anchorwoman Heather Unruh, director Tony Montana, actor Roberto Cavazos, eight House of Cards production team members, and many more, came forward with similar allegations.

A “number of persons” who said that Spacey “groped and behaved inappropriately with young guys” while serving as creative director of the Old Vic contacted The Guardian.
