Gareth Malone is a choirmaster and broadcaster from England who describes himself as an “animateur, presenter, & populariser of choral singing.”
He is well recognized for his television performances in shows like The Choir, which focuses on singing and exposing new members to choral music.
Malone was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (O.B.E.) for music services in the 2012 Birthday Honours.
Malone worked for the London Symphony Orchestra at L.S.O. St Luke’s until December 2009, where he directed the youth and community choirs. Malone was appointed Edward Heath Assistant Animateur in 2001 while working at the L.S.O.
He got his start on television when he was approached by 20/20, a production firm looking to develop a series about school singing.
They looked up the term “community choirmasters” without knowing who would host the show and came upon Malone’s name. The Choir was the result, and it received two BAFTAs and a Broadcast award.
Gareth Malone Illness: Has He been Diagnosis With Tinnitus?
Malone was diagnosed with Tinnitus and has stated that he considers himself “very lucky” since his Tinnitus is only mild. Still, he reminds others about the necessity of protecting their hearing.
Possibly one of the worst conditions for a choirmaster, Malone found it “impossible to come to terms with” and expressed his “upset” after being diagnosed in 2013.
Malone’s hearing troubles began abruptly when he contracted a typical cold virus and developed a sinus infection.
Having witnessed his grandfather lose his hearing in the years leading up to his death due to working on Lancaster bombers during WWII, Malone’s diagnosis brought back memories of his grandfather’s battle.
Following his grandfather’s diagnosis, Malone was eager to take any advice from his healthcare professional on how he could maintain his hearing and keep his Tinnitus at bay, especially at night when attempting to sleep.
